Genealogy

Genealogy research at the HRHS Library.

 

Over 2,200 books are in the library, about 30% of these are "Family History" books that include genealogies.

An obituary file with clippings from local newspapers.

Surname files that include various correspondence and other documents for each surname.

Cemetery records for virtually every cemetery in Rockingham County.

Church records.

And much more; birth certificates, undertakers records, property tax records, etc.

 

Many of these sources have been entered into the Family Search Database that is availble in the library. This database contains about 500,000 records. This database is available on line; it lists names, events (marriage, death, etc.) and where the source of information exists in the HRHS library.

Note that local libraries provide additional genealogy information.

- Massanutten Regional Library (Harrisonburg) has a special genealogy room with a lot of material. *

- Eastern Mennonite University has a special collections room with a large amount of German and other books.

- Bridgewater College also has a special collection room featuring United Brethren history. *

- James Madison University has a special collection (information online).
