Volume 7 History of Virginia Conferences of United Brethren December 26, 2024
Recommendations to Annual Conference. The following were recommended by their quarterly
conferences for admission to this Conference: From Hardy Circuit, I. Summers; Dayton Circuit, L. C.
Messick; Jones Spring Circuit, F. B. Chubb; Edinburg Circuit, H. B. Ritter; Elk Garden Circuit,
George M. McGuire; Bayard, William Vansickle; and Pleasant Valley, J. L. Argenbright. The Quarterly
Conference asked that Bro. J. L. Argenbright be reinstated in the Annual Conference and not be required
to pass the examination for applicants. The following from other conferences are recommended to this
Conference for membership, subject to transfer: Bros. B. F. Dotson, E. W. Webster, and G. S. Hanleiter,
W.Va. Conference; and John Ford, Kansas M. E. Conference.
Statistical. The following figures are approximately correct and will show the results of the
year’s work. There was a gain in membership of 135. Y.P.S.C.E., Sr., 50; Y.P.S.C.E., Jr., 16; members
in seniors, 2,695 members in juniors, 798; Telescopes taken, 548; Watchwords taken, 632; pastors’
[cumulative annual] salary, $23,341; Conference Home missions, $541.30; Conference Church
extension, $604.36; General Home missions, $731.50; General Church erection, $181.62; Foreign
missions, $586.39; WMA, $459.98; administration fund, $1,381.32; sustentation, $642.45; new
churches built and rebuilt, 4; new parsonages, 2; church improvements and paid on debt, $7,022,195;
and paid on parsonage equipments and debts, $5,335.30.
Recommendations. I recommend: (1) That there be a special page in the Minutes giving the
name of the charge and the amount contributed for Foreign Missions, WMA, Home Missions and
Church Erection. (2) That Temperance Day be observed on all of our charges, and that at least one
temperance sermon be preached at each appointment. (3) By order of the Board of Shenandoah
Collegiate Institute and School of Music, I recommend that a layman be elected at each quarterly
Conference preceding the commencement exercises of Shenandoah Collegiate Institute and School of
Music, who shall visit the School during commencement week. The same will be entertained by the
School and local church. (4) That a Conference Treasurer be re-elected, who shall receive all
conference assessments, and specials, and that he be paid $25 for his services annually; also that, the
treasurer pay to Bro. G. P. Hott $15 for past services from the Conference Church Extension Fund. (5)
That the Conference Assessment and Freewill Offering Sheet, to be presented, be adopted by the
Conference and that the Finance Committee make the columns of the assessment chart conform to this
sheet. I want here to repeat recommendations 5 and 6 of former Superintendent’s report, which are as
follows: (a) That a committee of four be appointed to audit the pastor’s report, said committee to report
to the Conference the name of the charge that has rendered a full report, as well as those that show a
deficit in any item, and that their report be printed in our published Minutes; and (b) That the
Conference order the payment of all beneficiaries every 3 months.
Personal. I have tried during the year to keep in touch with all the departments of church work,
and to carry out an aggressive policy for the Conference. The year has been fraught with toil. It has
brought also its anxieties, but, with all, God has given strength for the work. I have not been able to do
everything, but I have done all I could. I have been most kindly received by my brethren, and my
failures have been charitably dealt with, I am sure. The result of the year’s work is before you; of its
merits you must judge. I desire to thank the brethren and laity for the uniform kindness and courtesy
shown me on all occasions, and I pray God’s continued blessing on this body of consecrated men.
Yours in His name, A. S. Hammack, Conference Superintendent.
