Winchester District. To the Virginia Annual Conference, assembled at Toms Brook, Va.: Dear
brethren, In presenting to you this general report, I acknowledge the presence and blessing of the triune
God, and the courtesy and faithfulness of the ministers and people. The district consists of 18 charges,
all supplied with ministers at our last Conference, except Garrett Circuit, a part of which has been
attached to Hartmansville Circuit, and the remainder supplied by the West Virginia Conference. By
request, Lost River Circuit, has been locally divided, each part paying about the same on pastor’s salary
as was paid on the whole charge.
The Quarterlies have all been held in person or by proxy. The business and general interests
have all been looked after carefully. The revivals have been good; quite a number of additions to the
Church. The finances and literature are both fairly good, as will be fully shown by the statistics of the
ministers’ reports. The Sunday schools are lacking, not in children nor in money, but in well qualified
and consecrated teachers and officers. The Young People’s Societies have done well this year; there are
not enough of them. Two sessions of the Ministerial Institute were held on the district, both of which
were well attended and were interesting and profitable.
Seven new church houses have been officially arranged for, some of which are in course of
erection. Eleven church houses have been repaired and greatly improved. Three new churches, of good
character and well located, were built and dedicated free of debt, except a very small balance on two of
them, which is more than covered by subscription. Five of the eight parsonages on the district have been
repaired, and arrangements have been made for the erection of four new ones, one of which is almost
completed. A. R. Hendrickson, of South Branch Circuit, Osceola Ludwig, of Lost River Circuit,
Edgar C. Fearnow, of Great Cacapon Mission, and T. C. Harper, of Berkeley Circuit, have been licensed
to preach the Gospel. Bro. Hendrickson has been recommended by his Quarterly Conference and
examined by a committee preparatory to joining the Virginia Annual Conference at the present session.
The lives of the ministers and the health of their families have been preserved, so that the work has not
been hindered by sickness nor by death, for which we are devoutly thankful.
