Shenandoah District. Dear brethren of the Virginia Conference: Recalling the tender mercies
of our Heavenly Father and the universal kindness of the Church, I bring this my annual report. The
District consists of 1 Station, 3 Mission Stations, 2 Missions, and 13 Circuits—19 charges in all. These
were all supplied with pastors by the last Conference except 2nd Roanoke Mission. On March 25th, P. J.
Jennings resigned Blue Ridge Circuit, which resignation was duly accepted. Later in the year he moved
to the work and has been doing some work. On March 25th, Rev. George W. Rexrode—who joined the
Conference in 1858, along with Bro. J. W. Howe—fell asleep in Jesus. He was buried in Millwood
churchyard near Cross Keys, Rockingham Co., Va., and his grave has been suitably marked with a
marble slab. His memory is blessed. On April 4th, Rev. P. J. Lawrence resigned Pendleton charge and
Rev. T. J. Feaster was, on April 5th, duly appointed to the charge, and has served acceptably to the end
of the year. On July 19th, Rev. S. L. Rice resigned Roanoke Mission, which was accepted, taking effect
August 1st. Prof. J. N. Fries, A.M., supplied the pulpit temporarily one month, when Rev. T. C. Carter,
D.D., of Chattanooga, Tenn., was appointed and filled the station very acceptably since. On October 20,
1898, Rev. J. W. O. Ewing, after 2 months’ patient suffering, quit the labors of Churchville charge for
his Heavenly home. He died without an enemy, beloved by all. Rev. W. O. Jones was appointed to
serve the charge from November 20th to the close of the year. His labors have been blessed. All the
charges have been served with a good degree of efficiency.
Repairs on churches, parsonages, and payments on old debts have exceeded $1,000. A new
church—Herwin Chapel—was built, and dedicated on Lacey Springs charge, valued at about $900.
Three churches were built on Franklin Circuit, A. P. Walton pastor. This is an unusual record. One at
