Shenandoah District. Dear brethren: In submitting my report I refer first to the mercies of our
Heavenly Father and to the kindness of the Church, which have been abundant. The District consists of
15 circuits, 3 stations, and 1 mission. Four charges received missionary appropriations. Blue Ridge
circuit and Roanoke mission had no supplies during the year. We are still confident that that northwest
Roanoke furnishes an inviting field to our church, but conditions have not yet favored our entering it.
The present condition can be given by the pastor and delegate of the First Church. Rev. C. D. Bennett
resigned Rockbridge circuit March 28, 1899. Rev. W. S. Rau resigned Albemarle circuit April 11, 1899,
to be appointed to Rockbridge circuit April 13, 1899. Rev. E. A. Stanton was appointed to Albemarle
circuit April 25, 1899. Rev. J. A. Evans (col.), missionary, died at Princess Cottage Hospital, Freetown,
West Africa, September 21, 1899.

The pastors have all labored efficiently—some very worthily so—during the year. Two new
churches have been dedicated on Franklin charge, A. P. Walton pastor; and one on Elkton Circuit, C. P.
Dyche pastor; and, God willing, the dedicatory services of the house in which we now gather in this
centenary Conference will be held next Lord’s Day. The value of these four houses aggregate about
$8,000. There has been unusual activity in improving church and parsonage properties. Almost every
charge has shared in this. These improvements amount to near $5,000. One Ministerial Institute was
held at Mt. Clinton. It was well attended and fruitful of results. There are 19 Young People’s Societies
and 2 Junior Societies on the District. The convention held at Broadway was excellent. There is one
Woman’s Missionary Association at Dayton, Va., which is doing an excellent work. In a number of
places, the women of the church are organized under one name or another, and are doing very helpful
and much appreciated local work.

The number of conversions and accessions are, we think, about as last year, and will, we hope,
show an increase. Three have been licensed by the quarterly conference to preach, and two are
recommended to the Annual Conference for membership: E. A. Stanton, Peace Grove, Va., and Miss
Ida M. Judy, Pansy, W.Va. Shenandoah Institute is having a good attendance, and will be represented
by the Principal and Agent.
