Volume 7 History of Virginia Conferences of United Brethren December 26, 2024
My entire time has been given to the District. Sixty-four quarterlies have been held. Rev. A. P.
Funkhouser visited Newport News, as ordered by last Conference, and will report to this body when
called on. Received Salary, $593.63; one-half of rent of parsonage, $23.19; and presents, $2.47, for a
total received of $619.29. Paid to the Treas. of the District Parsonage on repairs and debt, $48.19.
Yours in Christ, George. P. Hott, P.E.
Winchester District. Dear brethren of the Virginia Conference: The District consists of
16 charges, 15 of which were regularly supplied at our last Conference. Lost River was supplied by
Rev. T. C. Harper from June 1st to September 1st, at which time he resigned the work to attend
Shenandoah Institute, and Rev. J. B. Ferguson, of Roanoke, Va., was appointed to fill the unexpired
term. On July 27th, Rev. B. P. S. Busey resigned Berkeley Springs circuit. After some delay, Rev. P. J.
Lawrence was selected to supply the charge. The Quarterlies have all been held, and the works are in
fairly good condition. Seven new churches, well located and of excellent character, have been dedicated
this year, with several in course of erection, and one splendid new house almost ready for dedication.
One Ministerial Institute was conducted, which was well attended and very interesting and beneficial.
The name of Rev. Edgar A. Pugh, whose death occurred within the year, has been referred to Rev. W. H.
Clary with a request to write a suitable memorial to present to this Conference.
There are 15 Senior and two Junior Young People’s Societies. Some of the Seniors are doing
excellent work for the Church. The two Juniors have increased in interest and numbers very
encouragingly. The Sabbath schools are in splendid working condition. Both teachers and officers have
done excellent work this year. The increase of assessment for pastors’ salary was about $1,000 more
than last year. Special efforts have been made to increase the circulation of the church’s literature, the
conference collections, and the ministers’ salaries with very satisfactory results.
George W. Burgess and T. C. Harper have been recommended by their respective quarterly
conferences for membership in this Conference. The health of the ministers has been unusually good,
and their work very commendable. The statistics of their reports will show the degree of their success.
The number of conversions has been limited, but the number of accessions has been almost equal to the
number of conversions. The spirit of consecration and devotion of the ministers to all of these important
interests is very encouraging. The church’s property is in good condition and almost entirely free from
debt. With gratitude to God for his goodness and thanks to the brethren for their kindness, I submit this
report. Assessment for P.E. salary, $624; received, $599.51; deficit, $24.49. Yours in His service, J. D.
Donovan, P.E.
