Winchester District. Mr. Bishop and Dear brethren: Through the blessings of God I am
permitted to present to you a report of the general work done on Winchester District for the Conference
year of 1896-97. The 16 charges of the district were all regularly supplied at our last Conference. The
ministers took the charges assigned them and worked faithfully to the end of the year, except Bro. E. A.
Pugh, who officially resigned Garrett Circuit, it being supplied by the Parkersburg Conference. The
quarterly conferences have all been held in person or by proxy. The general interests of the Church have
all been looked after carefully. Four new church houses have been dedicated, quite a number of
embarrassing debts on church property have been settled and the property released. The proper
appointments of the different trustees by the courts have received special attention, and all except three
boards are duly appointed and regularly organized. Some of the church and parsonage property now
owned and operated by the Conference are not secured to the Church by deed of conveyance, and such
deed cannot easily be obtained. The church records on the different charges have been looked after with
care, and all except two are in good condition. The health of the ministers has been excellent this year,
and they have been diligent in their work. Their reports will show the degree of success that has
attended their efforts. Their reports will also show the amounts of money collected for the different
interests, the number of members received, the amount of literature taken, and the condition of the
Sabbath schools. Amount of salary received, $573.80; presents, $9. Praying the blessings of God’s
precious spirit to be upon the meeting of this session of the Annual Conference, I am your most obedient
servant, J. D. Donovan, P.E.
Shenandoah District. To the Virginia Annual Conference: My Dear brethren, With grateful
heart this annual report is submitted. The district is composed of 18 fields of labor. All of these have
been served as arranged at our last session, except Lacey Springs—Bro. S. R, Ludwig resigned this field
on August 12, 1896, having served about 5 months. The charge then arranged with Rev. S. H. Snell,
who served it the remaining months of the year.
The new church house at Shenandoah City was dedicated the 24th of May, and the entire
indebtedness, $375, provided for. At Pleasant Valley an elegant church has been built during the year;
cost, $1,000. It was dedicated November 11th, and the entire cost of house is paid, much to the credit of
