circuit. Two semi-annual sessions of the Ministerial Institute were held, in May and September.

presents, $45. Respectfully, J. R. Ridenour.
Shenandoah District. Dear brethren: I am glad to meet you in this another session of our
Conference. Shenandoah District is composed of 17 charges. Three of these being new missions, were
left unsupplied and were referred to a Committee on Missions. G. W. Stover resigned Rockbridge
circuit April 21st, and August 23rd, N. A. Kiracofe, of Maryland Conference, was appointed to the
charge. E. A. Pugh, on account of ill health, resigned North Fork circuit in July, and since that time the
charge has been without regular preaching. All the other charges supplied by the Conference have been
served regularly by the preachers appointed to them.
Your Committee on Missions, at a meeting held April 24, 1891, employed S. K. Wine to
commence mission work at Shenandoah City the 1st of June and to continue the remaining part of the
year. He served the mission 4 months, then resigned; since that time it has received some attention from
the pastor of Elkton circuit. In May J. E. Fout appeared in our midst on the way to Roanoke to
commence mission work, being employed, as he stated, by A. P. Funkhouser; and after considerable
discussion, the committee approved of the undertaking, and work commenced. J. E. Fout left the work
in September, and since November J. W. Howe has had charge of the work. Notwithstanding the failure
of a large portion of the booming towns of Virginia, I am sure we have not made a mistake in locating
missions in these places. Shenandoah has a population of nearly 2,000, and a rapid growth assured.
Roanoke is already a city of about 20,000 inhabitants. In each of these places we have a group of church
members, who in their moral worth are not excelled by any church working there. In Shenandoah we
have a valuable lot on which there is now a foundation for a church, and efforts are being made to put it
under roof by the first of April.
I will not enumerate the results of work done, but am sure the reports from most of the charges
will show a commendable degree of success. During the year, there were held on the district
57 quarterly meetings; 46 of them I attended in person. Tried to preach 143 times. Received on salary,
from the charges, $521.19; use of district parsonage valued at $50, making a total of $571.19; presents
valued at $30. With thankfulness to our Heavenly Father for his blessings, and to the people among
whom I have toiled, brethren in the Ministry and Laity, for kind treatment and help, I am your brother in
Christ, I. M. Underwood.
