found quite a number of ladies and gentlemen in attendance, and think they are doing good work. The
Seminary is taking prominence, and we think its prosperity for the future is promising. Signed, J. W.
Hicks, W. R. Berry, and S. H. Shell. [They were re-elected for another year.]

Report of the Committee on Education (pp. 18-19). For 50 years and more, we have been
laboring in our Church work at the disadvantage of having no center or rallying point for workers,
When our young people wanted qualifications for life they looked to other churches. When our laborers
and brethren wanted to be so situated as to educate their families, they removed from our bounds. The
pressure of public opinion has been against us. All these years we have been looking for better days; we
have prayed that the good Lord would open the door for us, and that prayer has been answered. The
field is white for the harvest, and we are the favored laborers: To secure the best sheaves, we must whet
our sickles and train our reapers. No period has more demanded cultured, educated workers than the
present, and we are glad that the outlook is promising to supply the demand. Resolved (1) That we
rejoice in the success that has attended our educational work in the past and its prosperity, especially so
far as it relates to the institutions endorsed by the Conference—Lebanon Valley College and
Shenandoah Seminary. (2) That we continue our efforts in this Conference educational work until the
minimum sum of $10,000 shall be secured, and encourage our agent by subscriptions to our full ability
and kind words on all our fields. (3) That we increase our Board of Trustees to 15 members, who can be
and will be sufficiently interested in the work to labor for its success, and attend the annual meetings of
the Board. (4) That we authorize the Board of Trustees to take charge of Shenandoah Seminary,
provided a majority of the shares of the stock of said institution shall be proffered the Board, and other
inducements offered sufficient in the minds of the Board to warrant the undertaking. (5) That Union
Biblical Seminary is the Theological Seminary of the U.B. Church, and we will continue our efforts in
the future as in the past—working and praying for its full success. A. P. Funkhouser.

Visiting Committee to Shenandoah Seminary (p. 13). As your Visiting Committee to
Shenandoah Seminary, we would report that we were present at the close of the scholastic year and
found in attendance a number of students. As regards the status of the School at that time, we have
nothing special to report, but we think the School was doing as well as could be expected under the
circumstances. Since our last report, the Seminary has undergone some changes: First, It is now being
conducted under the auspices of a Joint-Stock Company. Second, It has changed it professors, and
having the report of the fall term from the present principal of the School, we learn that there were in
attendance 36 students. The income above expenses was $117. Seven of the students embraced
religion, of whom four joined the U.B. Church, and are preparing for the ministry. We notice that the
object of the School is not merely to cultivate the mental, but the moral and spiritual man as well. The
outlook for the spring term is quite promising. Notwithstanding the small number in attendance, we
think the Seminary is doing a noble work for the Church and the community in which it is located. We
ask for it the sympathy and hearty cooperation of all our people, and especially of our ministers.
Respectfully submitted, W. R. Berry, S. H. Snell, and J. W. Hicks.
