These valuable additions were made during the past year, and include the whole stock of the fine
laboratory recently belonging to the New Market Polytechnic Institute. Rhetorical Exercises—An

exercise in composition is required of each student once in three weeks, and a public rhetorical may be

held monthly. Besides these regular school exercises, an occasional lecture will be given for the benefit

of the students.

Rooms and Furniture—All the rooms in the Ladies’ Hall are furnished complete. The rooms for

young men are furnished in full or in part, as they may desire. It is designed that each room have two

occupants. Injuries to rooms or furniture, other than the usual wear and tear, must be paid for by the

offender. Students wishing to engage rooms or boarding can do so by addressing the Proprietor by
letter. Outfit and Furnishing—Students are required to furnish their own bedding, except mattress,

bolsters and pillows. They should also supply themselves with towels and napkins. Young men can

engage an unfurnished or a furnished room as desired. Those wishing to supply their own furniture

should so state in their application. All clothing, sheets, towels, etc., should be indelibly marked with
the owner’s full name. Ample accommodations will be made for the washing from all non-resident
pupils at the boarding hall. Boarding—All non-resident lady students room and board in the boarding
hall, under the immediate care of a lady teacher. The domestic department is under charge of Mrs. E. M.
Shipman, a lady of known ability in the culinary art. Some young men board with private families at a
very moderate price. Our system of club-boarding deserves notice. At the beginning of the year the
young men organize a club by electing a president, a secretary, a treasurer, who holds the funds, and a
steward, who transacts the business for them. Some furnish provision from home, for which they are
allowed market price. A lady, who furnishes kitchen and table ware, is employed at a small cost to take
charge of the culinary department. In this way students are enabled to get good boarding at a trifle
above actual cost of provisions. Boarding on this plan the past year cost about $1.00 per week. During
the coming, year effort will be made to secure an experienced and permanent steward. By complying
with the regulations of the club, students are received as members at any time. Each member of the club
is required to deposit with the treasurer the whole cost of the month, in advance. As only the actual cost
of provisions is charged, this is necessary to secure the club against loss. Those failing to comply with
this requirement will forfeit their right to the advantages of the club.

Terms of Payment—All dues are payable each term in advance, unless otherwise agreed upon.
Children of ministers in the active work will be received at a reduction of one-half on all charges of
tuition. No deductions will be made except in cases of protracted sickness of 2 weeks or more.
Examinations—The last week of the Fall and Spring terms will be devoted to the public examination of
classes, which will end with a literary entertainment. The winter term will close with an examination
before the teachers. No pupil will be permitted to leave the institution prior to examination and closing
exercises, except by special permission. As absence or irregularity during any part of the term,
especially near its close, is greatly detrimental to the interest of the pupil, it is earnestly desired that as
far as possible arrangements will be made by parents for attendance during the entire term. Students
may be received at any time, but they should enter, if possible, on the first day of the term.

Terms and Vacations—The Academic Year is divided into three terms: The Fall Term of
16 weeks will begin on Tuesday, September 2, 1879, and end on Friday, December 19, 1879. The
Winter Term of 11 weeks will begin Tuesday, January 6, 1880, and end on Friday, March 19, 1880. The

Spring Term of 12 weeks will begin on Monday, March 22, and close on June 11, 1880.
