Shenandoah District. Dear brethren: I herewith present a report of Shenandoah District, to
which I was appointed by Bishop Dickson for the unexpired term of Rev A. P. Funkhouser, beginning
August 25, 1881. It is eminently fitting that I recognize the goodness and mercy of our Heavenly
Father, whose presence and help I have realized in the discharge of the duties devolving upon me, and
also the forbearance and sympathetic help of both ministers and laity as I have cooperated with them in
church work. The vacancy on Dayton Circuit occasioned by my resignation was supplied by Rev.
C. I. B. Brane, who has labored acceptably since October 10th, 1881.

Four camp meetings were held during the month of August, with fair results. Nelson Mission
has been supplied since September 1st by Bro. N. F. A. Cupp, who has labored with a good degree of
success. Augusta Freedman’s Mission has been partially supplied, Bro. Payne not being situated so as
to give his whole time to the work. Rockingham Freedman’s Mission has had no regular pastor during
the year, much to the detriment of the work.

The district is in a fairly good condition. Most of the pastors have labored faithfully and
successfully. The assessments of Conference will be pretty generally met. Some of the pastors I fear
will realize a too common experience, viz., a shortage in salary. The number of Telescopes I think will
show an increase over last year. Two church houses are nearing completion, and will be ready for
dedication during the Spring or early Summer. During the 6 months I preached 100 times, and held
32 quarterly meetings, two of which were by proxy. Salary received, $473.72; presents, $20. Praying
the blessing of God upon the work performed, this report is respectfully submitted, J. W. Funk, P.E.

South Branch District. Dear brethren: With the dust of the battle and the weariness of the
march upon us, we come up again from the field of the Lord’s conquest. Through summer and winter,
cloud and sunshine, day and night, the great Captain of our salvation has led us on. As He was made
perfect through suffering, so our year of toil has been one of discipline from God for good. The District
comprises 7 circuits, 2 missions, and 1 station, sparsely covering an area of about 150 miles square and
extending into three States. The pastors all received the assignments of the Annual Conference
