dormitories all the ladies who matriculate as students. Two years ago, you will remember, extensive
improvements were made in the Ladies’ Building. But still lacking room, other changes were made last
summer. The dormitory formerly used by gentlemen was equipped for ladies; and yet there is not room.
During the entire present session, several girls have been compelled to room in town, and the prospects
are that as many as 25 or 30 will have to room in town during our coming spring term. All of our boys
must room in town, save eight, who are occupying the building on the west side of Seminary street. You
will observe from this that more dormitory room is a necessity—absolute for ladies, and merited for
gentlemen. I wish it were in the hearts of the members of the Virginia Conference, as certainly as the
means are in their purses, to rally to a mighty effort to equip the institution as it so richly deserves. The
property is being made more attractive and valuable each year. So it is plainly seen that money
contributed is not lost, but is expended where it will continue to do good for an indefinite time. We need
a better water supply. We need an athletic field. Our athletic club has been able to secure grounds each
year at a high rent; but should these grounds be sold for other purposes, the opportunity to secure a
convenient field will be gone.

Our patronage is drawn from a wide territory. Your School is favorably known far from its
location as well as within the bounds of Virginia Conference. But we want more children from U.B.
homes. Barely one-fourth of the patronage of your School is from the families of our Church.

Our teaching force is a matter of great concern each year. Our new teachers this year are C. P.
Light (Washington and Lee University), teacher of Classics and Higher Mathematics; Miss Winnie
McGlamery (Dunsmore Business College), teacher of Shorthand and Typewriting; and Miss Amy Allen
(Peabody Conservatory of Music), teacher of Voice. All former teachers, except Prof. Loomis and Miss
Fielding, are numbered in the present teaching force. Other instructors are secured as needed.

In this era of prosperity, most schools are flourishing, but it is the earnest hope of those in
immediate charge of your School that we may not enter into an era of financial depression until much of
the God-given wealth of our Church is consecrated to the cause of elevating the race by providing for
the educating of the youth of our land. Respectfully submitted, E. U. Hoenshel, Principal.
