the time for concerted action upon the part of all of the friends of the institution to free it from its
indebtedness and to prepare the way for much needed improvement. (2) That the Board and faculty will
pledge $2,500, on condition that the full amount of the debt, $7,741.91, be secured by assessing fifty
cents per member to the charges. (3) That the faculty assist, as far as possible, in this debt-raising
campaign by going through the Conference lecturing, preaching, and singing, charging only their

The Institute is located in the famous Shenandoah Valley, about 4 miles from Harrisonburg, Va.,
the county-seat of Rockingham County. The population around is composed to a great extent of U.B.
families. The influences thrown around students are such as are conducive to a
healthy state o£ both mind and body. The property of the institution is worth
$25,000. The music department is a special feature of the School—an excellent
orchestra of 20 members and a band of 25 members, with more than 100 pupils

Report of the Conference Superintendent (p. 5). Shenandoah Collegiate Institute and School
of Music is the property of the Virginia Conference. It is an institution that we can well afford to be
religiously proud of. The enrolment for the present year [1908-09] has passed the 200 mark and is the
largest attendance in the history of the institution. It takes high rank as a preparatory and musical
school. It gives more for the money than any other institution of its kind in the South. Our own people
