on excellent year. The Howe Memorial Building, erected at a cost of about $7,000, is a great addition to
the School. Dedicatory exercises will be held March 18th, 1902.
Report of the Committee on Education (p. 22-23). …In the history of the Church of the
United Brethren in Christ, marvelous progress has been made since the establishment of her institutions
of learning. Since then, our prestige and standing as a denomination has, to a great extent, been
commensurate with the standing and works of our educational institutions. These are our own
institutions, and upon us rests the responsibility for their condition. But how can a college without an
endowment, burdened with a monstrous debt,81 simply eking out an existence, maintain its own standing
and prestige to a Church back of it, neglecting it? Can a theological seminary, the representative
institution of the church, whose work is unexcelled by any theological institution of any other
denomination, but whose current expenses cannot be met by the Church it represents, with a debt that is
almost crushing it—can such an institution continue to reflect credit on our beloved Church? What can
be done? May God awaken us to see our duty as constituents of our Christian colleges and seminary,
and help us to get in line with the debt-paying wave that is now happily passing over our church.
Since this has been designated by the last General Conference as the Educational Quadrennium,
be it: Resolved, (1) That, as a denomination, we “awake…stretch every nerve and press with vigor on”
towards the advancement of our educational institutions, the liquidation of all their indebtedness, and the
establishment of ample endowment funds, thereby placing them on solid foundations for successful
81 The name of the institution cited is unclear, but from the following remarks is likely to be Union Biblical Seminary.
