himself that mind and heart culture, that will fit him for life. In doing this you serve humanity, and you
help yourselves. Doubtless, in directing young people to a Christian institution, you cannot do better
than to cite them to our own schools. These schools are doing a good work, and are worthy of our
highest commendation. Respectfully submitted, J. N. Fries. Adopted.

Report of Shenandoah Institute (p. 31). Dear Brethren: Since bringing my last annual report
before you, the name of your institution of learning has been changed, by permission of state authority,
and is now known legally and popularly as Shenandoah Collegiate Institute and School of Music. The
change in name was made especially that the music department might appear more prominent, in it than
was true of the old name, Shenandoah Institute. The management feels that no good points have been
lost by the change, but that some have been gained. And not in name only do we feel that we have
gained. The building and grounds are being steadily improved, and the dormitories are being better
furnished than formerly. The library is richer because of the purchase of books and also, especially,
because of the valuable donation of what is known as the “Bishop Hott Library,” consisting of a few
hundred volumes. These books have been placed in a beautiful case, the gift of Bro. Ephraim Ruebush.

Additions to the faculty and teaching force have been made in the persons of Misses Grace L.
Petty and Leonora Coiner. Miss Petty is teacher of Elocution and assists in piano; Miss Coiner is
teacher of the Primary department. Our attendance shows a fine gain percent of increase over last year,
and the morale of the student body is exceptionally good—a matter of favorable comment by all who
know the School. The attendance at the religious exercises of the School is better and more uniform
than ever before. Owing to the removal of Prof. C. A. Funkhouser and family from the Ladies’
Building, Miss Lucy Miller has been secured as matron for the Spring Term. While the health of the
student body has been good, a shadow fell when the President of our Board of Trustees, Dr. C. M.
Strickler was removed by death. With the present equipment and the general popularity of your School,
we predict a steady and continuous growth. Respectfully submitted, E. U. Hoenshel, Principal.
