Excerpts of the Report of the Committee on Education (p. 18). ...Therefore, recognizing the
great need of Christian culture, be it, Resolved, (1) That we regard the Shenandoah Institute, located at
Dayton, Va., as the educational center of the Conference and that we will do all in our power to increase
its efficiency, to enlarge and improve its buildings, and to equip all of its departments for better work.
To this end we will preach on education and aid the Conference Agent and faculty in securing students
and funds on our several charges. (2) That we rejoice in the great prosperity of Lebanon Valley College
and pledge to that institution our continued and loyal support as the college of this patronizing territory.
(3) That we highly appreciate Union Biblical Seminary as one of the best-equipped and organized
theological schools of our nation and will continue to give it our loyal support and point our young men
and women preparing for the ministry to its halls for training and equipment for their high calling.
Submitted, A. J. Secrist, [for the] Committee. It was adopted.

substantiate it. That Christian education is the only safe education is a proposition not so universally
accepted, but one which is certainly believed to be true by this body of Christian workers. Many
schools, some of which can justly lay little claim to do moral training, are seeking patronage in the
homes of your parishioners or friends. But your School is professedly a Christian school. It seeks to
train the mind according to the latest and best approved methods, but it also recognizes that no student
can do his best if he closes his eyes and heart against the truths of the Eternal Kingdom. Therefore, with
the utmost of interest, and with judicious care, Shenandoah Institute seeks to keep the Ideal Life ever
before her students. To the Faculty of last year two new members were added: Prof. S. W. Beazley, in
the Music Department; and Prof. C. A Funkhouser, in the Literary Department, who, with his family,
lives in the Ladies’ Building. Additional teaching force being needed, Dr. E. B. Funkhouser was
secured to assist in the Literary Department, and Miss Zetta Smith to assist with the Music. The old
debt upon the Institute is now paid. A rather liberal expenditure was made last fall for internal
