the benefits that have accrued to us therefrom, and recognizing it as necessary to the best ministerial
work in the Church.

We regard the Union Biblical Seminary, at Dayton, Ohio, as an absolute necessity for the church,
and rejoice in the work it is doing and progress it is making, and most earnestly advise all contemplating
the work of the ministry in the U.B. Church to take a course therein. We most heartily approve the
action of the Board and the plans of the General Manager for the observance of the Quarter Centennial
Anniversary, and will do what we can to make the same a success. To this end, the presiding elders and
pastors are requested to provide for and hold appropriate exercises in as many of our churches as
possible during the year, and see that all of our people be given an opportunity and be urged to
contribute something to this fund. The Finance Committee is hereby instructed to make the assessments
to the several charges aggregate the amount apportioned to the Conference under the disciplinary
provision, and every pastor is urged to collect the full amount assessed to his charge. O. W. Burtner.

Report of Shenandoah Institute (p. 17). Dear Brethren: This day is presented to you the
12th annual report of your institution of learning at Dayton, Va. In looking over the years of its
existence, we cannot be unmindful of the blessings of our kind Heavenly Father which have attended.
From the first it has steadily grown in influence, and closing its 20th year [1875-76 was its first] as an
institution it demands the respect of all. Its scholars have honorable standing in almost every profession
and calling. The Church has been greatly blessed both in the ministry and laity by it. The year ending
June 6th [1895] had an enrollment of 134, quite an increase over the former year. There were six
graduates in the Literary Courses, two in the Music Teachers Course, six in Commercial Studies, six in
Plain Penmanship, and eight in the Bible Normal Union Studies.

The Board, in its annual meeting, re-elected the Faculty and continued, the management as [in]
the former year. Associated are several instructors who are doing excellent work. Arrangements are
made for a Spring Term Normal for teachers. Our Music and Art departments give superior advantages.
They are unequaled in the Valley, we believe. The present year [1895-96] has been pleasant and mainly
prosperous. The religious interest has been good; prayer meetings are well attended. The attendance for
the year up to this date is a little behind last year, but the year will be among the best in the work of the
institution. There will be a number completing the several courses of study in June [1896]. The
finances are carefully canvassed each year, and the institution is run within its income. The small debt
ought to be provided for. This Conference could easily do it. Why should we longer leave this most
important work of the Conference burdened by debt? Then, brethren, in these times of close
competition, it will require the united effort of the church to sustain our institution. Every minister must
be an agent for the School. As a church, double benefits would be received should we double the
attendance. Many of our people persist in supporting other schools instead of our own. What should be
done with them? A large edition of the annual catalogue was issued. The People’s Educational Monthly
was discontinued, and the advertising done through other media.78 With thanks to all for the hearty
support given the work during these years, this report is respectfully made. G. P. Hott, Principal [whose
recent 9-year term ended in 1896, when he was appointed a presiding elder (a district superintendent)].

Visiting Committee to Shenandoah Institute. No report.

78 As noted, the material normally provided by the catalog was previously embedded in the June issue of The People’s
Educational Monthly.
