Board of Direction (p. 22). The Board met in annual session June 4th. Rev. W. R. Berry was elected
president, Prof. J. N. Fries secretary, and E. Ruebush, Esq., treasurer. John Geil, Esq., Rev. George P. Hott, and
Mr. E. Ruebush were elected Executive Committee. The usual canvass was made of the affairs of the School, and
such measures adopted as seemed wise. The faculty was retained as last year. Mr. Harvey S. Gruver, a graduate
of Shenandoah Normal College, and who last year was principal of East Point Graded School, will teach and have
charge of the gentlemen’s hall [1895 Catalogue, p. 22]. The degree of A.M. was conferred in course on Prof. C.
A. Funkhouser, of Hagerstown, Md. All the members were present except John Geil. The presiding elders were
continued as financial agents. The meeting was harmonious, and the spirit of the Board presages good for the
institution.

Excerpts of the Report of the Committee on Education (pp. 15-16). …Therefore, realizing
the great need of this higher Christian education, both in the ministry and laity of the Church, as well as
in the State, and righteously coveting the great boon to he conferred thereby: Resolved, (1) That we
pledge ourselves to heartily encourage and support all true educational work. (2) That as ministers we
will be more diligent Bible students, and that we will keep ourselves abreast of the times by the perusal
of leading magazines, and such matter as will help us to be intelligent leaders of our people. (3) That we
impress upon our young men preparing for the ministry the fact that there are great and increasing
demands made of the Gospel Minister, and that we urge the very great importance of a thorough
classical education as well as theological training. (4) That Shenandoah Institute is indispensable to the
best possible advancement of our educational work in Virginia, and that we favor the speedy raising of
the money necessary to free this School from debt; also that we will do more to secure students from our
field of labor, and do all that, we can to advance the interests of this our beloved institution. (5) That we
recognize in Lebanon Valley College a valuable institution in our educational work, and that we
continue to it our support, hoping that it may be soon free from debt and have a productive endowment
fund instead. (6) That we will be truly loyal to the Union Biblical Seminary, taking full cognizance of
