Report of the Committee on Education (pp. 15-16). It is generally conceded among us as a
people that education is pleasant, is useful, is even absolutely indispensable. We are led to believe this,
if from no other reason, from modern statistics, which prove that wherever education is diffused among
the people the ratio of the number of criminals to the whole population diminishes; and that in all
countries the criminal class is led by the ignorant class. Hence, we teach and preach that the Watchword
of our country should be “Educate! Educate!” But there is something infinitely more important than
mere knowledge—it is wisdom. The most indifferent reader of God’s Word cannot but observe the
distinction made between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is given by the state education, but
Wisdom comes from the Christian education given by the Church. It has taken us some time to
understand that church education complements, not supplements, the state education. That, as Paul says,
“Knowledge puffeth up, but love buildeth up.” Hence, to be truly educated, we must have the education
of the heart and the conscience, as well as of the intellect—an education transfigured by religion and
morals. The demand of our Church is not only for a better educated and more consecrated ministry, but
also the pew. What we want for a successful congregation is a prepared pulpit and a prepared pew. And
now, recognizing the necessity of this higher education and the great blessing to be conferred thereby,
therefore, Resolved, (1) That we express our thankfulness to God for his leading in the educational work
of the Church, and pledge ourselves to follow more closely in the way that He directs. (2) That we will
continue our support to Union Biblical Seminary, and pray for its continued prosperity and usefulness.
(3) That we recognize in Lebanon Valley College an efficient institution in the educational work of the
Church, and will continue to it our sympathy and our aid. (4) That we take full cognizance of the
benefits that have accrued to us from our own institution, Shenandoah Institute, and pray for the
