4. 1877 Reports

Officers of the Conference (p. 2). Rev. A. P. Funkhouser served as one of two secretaries of
the Conference (with W. O. Grimm).

Report of the Reading Committee (p. 5). Inasmuch as Rev. J. N. Fries duly appeared before
the Committee on Second Year’s Course of Reading, before the opening of this session, and passed an
examination upon which said Committee reported favorably, and the Conference took favorable action
on said report, during the first day’s session; therefore, Resolved, That he be now passed from Second to
Third Year’s Course of Reading. G. W. Statton and A. M. Evers for the Committee.

Report of the Committee on Education (pp. 12-13). The report on Education was reported,
amended, and adopted: “Knowledge is power.” Mind gives superiority. This is seen in nations,
communities, and individuals. For strength and development of character, exercise is necessary. Want
of effort makes the mind, as well as the body, effeminate; while trying makes men giants. In this age no
business man can succeed without at least some education, and above all should the Christian minister
be qualified for his important field. To aid us to reach these ends, the following resolutions are
presented. Union Biblical Seminary: Resolved, That in Union Biblical Seminary we recognize a long-
needed help of the Church and shall continue to work and pray for its success. Lebanon Valley College:
Resolved, (1) That we are glad to learn of the increased attendance of students at Lebanon Valley
College and wish it continued success and prosperity. (2) That the vacancies occurring in the Board of
Trustees be filled by the election of A. M. Evers, John Wesley Kiracofe, and C. B. Hammack. (3) That
the Conference Agency be continued. (4) That all moneys secured by Bro. Keedy, as Agent for L.V.C.,
be paid to the Treasurer of the Educational Fund of the Virginia Conference, to be held as a permanent
educational fund of the Conference. Home Education: Resolved, (1) That the time is at hand when our
necessities demand a preparatory school in the bounds of our own Conference, and we shall encourage
any plausible plan looking towards this end. (2) That a Conference Educational Society be organized
and incorporated, and that a committee be appointed to draft a constitution and by-laws, to report at our
next session. (3) That a committee be appointed to prepare an address on education, to be published
with our Conference Minutes and in the Telescope. A. P. Funkhouser, for the Committee. J. W. Hott
was selected to draft a constitution, and A. P. Funkhouser was selected to prepare an address.

Report of the Third Year’s Course of Reading (pp. 4, 6). The following report was adopted:
Your Committee on Third Year’s Course of Reading report favorably of Bro. J. N. Fries [among others].
All of these brethren are sound in doctrine and gave evidence that they have read all the books required.

56 The Officers of the Conference for each year are those printed at the beginning of the Minutes for that year. The names

may be a little confusing, because some of them are elected during the Conference described in the Minutes, and that

election may be described in later text. Thus, the 1878 officers are those elected at the 1878 Annual Conference and
served during conference year 1878-79. —The Editor.
