3. DATE:
1743.
4. OWNERS:

5. DESCRIPTION:

The Linville Creek Church was disturbed by the Indians in 1757, and many church members fled to eastern
Virginia to escape this cruel treatment. Contention soon arose between the Old School Baptists and the
Primitive Baptists over Sunday-Schools and early missionaries, etc. This occurred from 1838 to 1842 and the
strife became so bitter that some of the preachers were mistreated and one, John Ireland, was sent to jail at
Culpeper for preaching without a permit.
At the time of this division, about 1840, the Primitive Baptists had churches at Dayton, Linville Creek, Mount
Pleasant, and Remians Creek, the two latter being in Brocks Gap.
The first church in the county was established at Mount Crawford in 1844. The churches above named were
organized before Rockingham County was formed.
