Va. Conf. in 1928 and was ordained in 1933. On June 11, 1930, he was married to Miss Emma Shaffer of
Harrisburg, Pa. The Millers have two children, Joyce Shaffer, and Millard Joseph. Rev. Miller taught history at
Hershey High School two years between college and seminary. He joined Va. Conf. in 1928, and was ordained
in 1933. Rev. Miller taught Bible at Shenandoah College and has taught several courses at Otterbein College.
He served Dayton Circuit, 1933-37; Winchester Station, 1937-38; and Conference Superintendent, 1937-
1939. He also served as Denominational Youth Director 1940-1945, and has been pastor of Westerville First
Church since 1945. He has received into church membership over 1,200 members. He is a product of the
Berkeley Springs Circuit (Alpine Charge) and we proudly claim him as our very own. He served Winchester
U.B. Church 1937-1938. His memoir is provided in Section II.A (below). The picture on the left was on the

MILLER: Thomas Miller became a member of Conference in 1825; ordained 1828; preached at Whitesel’s;
lived in Shenandoah Co.; married a Painter; and served as a designated Conference Itinerant, 1826-27;
Virginia Circuit, 1827-29; and Conference Itinerant, 1929-31. He later joined Lutheran Ch. [Funkhouser
1921, p. 141] and [Lycoming 2013]
MILLER: Dr. Wade Sellers Miller was born Feb. 17, 1904 near Mt. Sidney,
Va. He was converted and joined Union Chapel U.B. Church in 1915. He was
educated at Weyers Cave High School, Lebanon Valley College, Ohio State, and
the United Seminary. He received his honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from
Lebanon Valley College in 1939. He has held the following positions: History
professor at Shenandoah College; College pastor at Dayton, Virginia; Dean and
Acting President of Shenandoah College; Shenandoah College President;
Director of Public Relations, Otterbein College; Director of Centennial Program
at Otterbein College; and Vice-President of Otterbein College since 1956. He
holds his church membership at St. Paul’s Church, Staunton, Va. A Wade T. Miller joined Va.
Conf. in 1927. Wade S. Miller died in 1985. His memoir is provided in Section II.A (below). The picture on

MILLER: William J. Miller became a member of Conference in 1864 and
was ordained 1868. He transferred to the North Kansas Conference in
1890. He was pastor for the churches in the Berkeley Springs (Bath)
Circuit (now, the Alpine Charge) during 1871-73. He also served Eastern
Virginia Circuit, 1868-69; Page Valley Mission, 1869-71; New Creek Circuit,
1873-76; Winchester Circuit, 1878-79; and Winchester Mission Station,
1878-80. He was married to Leannah. Her memoir is provided in Section
II.A (below). The pictures are from [Glovier 1965, p. 68-70], the one on

MILLER: William Miller was another member of Conference in 1831; silenced for running his horse on a
race track about 1836; died in Pennsylvania 1852. [Funkhouser 1921, p. 142; see also pp. 125, 242-243]

MILLS: Bishop Job Smith Mills, Ph.D., (1848-
1909), 27th bishop of the UBIC, presided over Va.
Conf. in 1895 and 1902-07. He dedicated a new
building for Berkeley Springs Station (now, First
Church) in 1907. Bishop J. S. Mills was born in
Washington County, Ohio, on Feb. 28, 1848. His
father was of the Society of Friends, but soon after
marriage he, with his wife, joined the U.B. Church.
The bishop’s early education was obtained in the
neighborhood common schools, with two years in
an academy. Later he spent 4 years in the Illinois
Wesleyan University, from which he subsequently received the degrees of A.M. and Ph.D. on examination. He
was converted at the age of eighteen, joined the Scioto Conference two years later, in 1868, and was
ordained in 1871. When the Central Ohio Conference was formed, in 1878, he became a member of that
body, and in 1890 he transferred his membership to the Iowa Conference. On entering the ministry he served
on circuits, stations, and as presiding elder, his last pastoral charge being the Otterbein University church, to
which he gave 6 years of service. From Otterbein he was called to Western College, which institution he
served for 6 years, three years as a professor and three as its president. Bishop Mills was a man of strong
