church then was associated with the Evangelical Association. Soon after, Mr. Miller connected himself with the
United Brethren, he became a local preacher for the Conference and in 1874 became an ordained elder. He
served Cacapon Mission, 1874-76, and South Fork Mission, 1876-77. He was an exceptional man. He
frequently traveled a circuit, serving several large charges in reach of his home. As a preacher he was clear,
logical, and scriptural. As a layman he was much respected and wielded a good influence.” He served the
Church as a minister for 50 years. He died triumphantly at his home near Purgitsville on Mar. 9, 1892, at the
age 67 years, 3 months and 3 days. Interment was in the Otterbein Church Cemetery at Purgitsville,
Hampshire County, W.Va. His memoir is provided in Section II.A (below). [Funkhouser 1921, pp. 142, 176;

MILLER: Donald R. Miller, son of Lawrence and Marie Miller, was born Aug. 6, 1931, at Grafton, W.Va. He
was converted in 1951 at a Methodist Church in Grafton. His education consists of four years in high school
and two years in college. He is married and the father of three children: Lawrence Hugh, Dinah Jean, and
Janet Kay. He is listed as employed. He served the West Frederick Charge, 1963-66. ). [Funkhouser 1921,
pp. 287-288] and [Glovier 1965, p. 299-300]

MILLER: E. Cameron Miller, son of Dr. E. E. and Gladys Leigh Miller, was born in
Cumberland, Md., Feb. 16, 1926. He was converted and joined the First U.B. Church at
Martinsburg, W.Va., in 1937. He was educated at the Harrisonburg High School, Shenandoah
(Class of 1946) and Madison Colleges, and the University of Virginia. He received his B.S.
degree from Madison College and M.Ed. from the University. He has been Principal of the
McGaheysville, Port Republic and Elkton Elementary Schools in Rockingham County. In 1965
he is Principal of the Turner Ashby High School at Dayton, Va. Since 1948 Mr. Miller has taught
in the Rockingham County schools. He served as lay-pastor of the Mt. Horeb Church at Hinton,
1945-50; Cedar Grove Circuit, 1960-64, and Keezletown Circuit, 1964-66. He is a devoted and efficient
teacher and pastor. He, with his family, resides in Harrisonburg. [Glovier 1965, pp. 298-299 (“Cameron

MILLER: Dr. Essie Edwood Miller was born Nov. 9, 1893, at
Windsor, N.C., the son of John Elwood and Evelyn Castellan
Miller. In 1915 E. Edwood Miller matriculated at Shenandoah
Collegiate Institute and graduated from there in 1919. He was
licensed and joined Conference in 1920 and was ordained in
1925. He then registered at Lebanon Valley College and
graduated from there in 1922 (A.B.). He later attended
Bonebrake Seminary at Dayton, Ohio (1924-25); took
extension courses from Harvard University (1936-40); and
received his B.D. (1929) and Doctor of Divinity (1938) degrees
from Pike’s Peak Seminary, Col. His first pastorates were at Harriston and Elk Garden (1918-20) while a
student at Shenandoah Collegiate Institute; and Jonestown while at Lebanon Valley. He has served as pastor
on 13 different charges and circuits in Va. Conf., and he is pastor of Cumberland First Church in 1964-1965.
Dr. Miller has served on numerous boards and committees in the Conference. He was Director of
Development of Shenandoah University from 1949-1956. He served: Belvedere, Jan. 1918-June 1919; Elk
Garden, W.Va., June 1919-Sep. 1919; Jonestown (Pa. Conf. while a student), 1919-21; Broadway, Sep. 1922-
Sep. 1924; Bayard, W.Va., June 1925-Sep. 1925; Cumberland, Md., 1925-26; Roanoke, 1926-34; Keyser,
W.Va., 1934- 35; Martinsburg First, 1935-40; Harrisonburg, 1940-49; Dayton, Sep. 1949-Aug. 1955; Mt.
Clinton, Aug. 1955-Sep. 1956; and Cumberland, Md., First, Sep. 1956-June 1968. Superannuated, 1968. His
first wife, Gladys L. (Bright) Miller, whom he married Jan. 16, 1924, was born at Mathias, W.Va., 1902 and
died at Martinsburg, W.Va., May 26, 1937, aged 35 years. His second wife was Hope F. Vanever, whom he
married on June 10, 1950. He residence was at Third Street in Broadway, Va. He died Apr. 28, 1987, age 93.
President James A. Davis established The Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Miller Scholarship Fund at Shenandoah College on
Sep. 6, 1988, through a generous bequest. His memoir, as well as Gladys’s, is provided in Section II.A

MILLER: John Miller served Mechanicstown Circuit, 1831-32. Nothing else is known. Possibly this is Rev.
John Prior Miller, son of Rev. Adam Miller, Baptist, born Feb. 18, 1809, in Greene County, Pa.; mar. Mary
Shrum Sep. 8, 1828, Franklin Co., Ohio; mar. Margaret Liggett Collins May 10, 1852, St. Joseph Co, Ind.; and
d. Sep. 28, 1889, Jefferson, Mich.—however, this John Miller moved to Michigan in 1830 with his father from
Franklin Co., Ohio. [Funkhouser 1921, pp. 59, 243]

MILLER: Millard J. Miller—Conference Superintendent during 1937-39—born
July 17, 1905, the son of Joseph S. Miller and Lucy Ann Ritchie Miller, near Mt.
Sidney, Augusta County, Va. He was converted in a revival meeting at Union
Chapel U.B. Church in 1918, under the preaching of Rev. David F. Glovier. He is
