communion set and collection plates at $25.”
Dedication of Dayton U.B. Church, 1904. On September 18, 1904, Bishop W. M. Weekley, of
Dayton, Ohio, dedicated the new church. The Minutes
continue with a couple more items of interest. November 9,
1904, “On motion it was agreed that $1.25 per month be paid
the Ladies Aid Society for cleaning the Church….” April 5,
1905, “A bill for $3.65 for horse feed paid by J. H. Ruebush
was ordered paid.” Rev. T. C. Harper, the first pastor of the
church, as rebuilt, received an annual salary of $400.
A Sunday School area was built in 1918 while Rev. D. D. Brandt was minister, at a cost of
$5,000; and in 1926, under the leadership of Rev. U. P. Hovermale, a three-story building was added to
the northeast corner, at which time the four-manual Möhler pipe organ was placed in its present position.
Becoming Dayton EUB Church, 1946. In 1946, the U.B. Denomination joined with that of The
Evangelical Church. After the merger, the church became Dayton U.B. Church. In 1950, while Rev.
J. A. Swain was pastor, excavation was made beneath the church, and a modern social hall together with
a fully-equipped kitchen was added.
A clipping from a newspaper dated June
18, 1961 tells of another dedication: The
congregation of the Dayton EUB Church will
hold a special service of dedication Sunday at
10:45 am. The occasion will mark the
completion of three new Sunday school
classrooms, a nursery, and pastor’s study,
accomplished by the rearrangement of two
oversized Sunday School rooms. Work on this
project, which covered some months, was done
by the men of the church after regular working
hours. The congregation is deeply appreciative of their sacrifices and generosity. The service, which
will be conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Andrew Agnew, will be interspersed with special music by the
Spring Creek Quartet and by the regular church choirs. Honoring the men of the church the Senior
Choir will sing ‘Rise Up O Men of God’ with the musical setting by H. T. Scull. ‘Bless This House’ by
Brahms, will be presented by the Junior Choir, along with Malott’s ‘Lord’s Prayer.’ Mrs. James L.
Ruebush will be the organist for the service, and Miss Priscilla Harman will accompany the Junior
Choir. Both choirs will be directed by Mrs. C. H. Connor, in the absence of the Senior Choir Director,
Mrs. L. P. Hill, Jr. The public is cordially invited to worship with this congregation on Sunday morning.
Following the service, a picnic dinner and a period of fellowship will be enjoyed on the former
