The Rockingham County Baseball League
(posted 5-14-02)
An exhibit titled
"Legacy of Lineweaver: The Rockingham County Baseball League"
will be on display at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society from
May 24 to October 7, 2002. J. R. "Polly" Lineweaver, a sports
writer for the Daily News-Record in the 1920's, contributed to the inception
of the league in 1924.
Members of the RCBL
who have been leaders in the league's development have agreed to loan
significant items for the exhibit. Richard Tysinger loaned uniforms, bats,
and photos dating from the league's beginnings to the present time. Karl
Olschofka, informal historian of the league, contributed his extensive
knowledge of the league, as well as photographs and mitts. Other contributors
include Carl McNett and Ozzie Armentrout.
Baseball serves as
a unifying force, not only at the national level for the Major Leagues,
but also in local clubs across the country. The sport appeals to a broad
audience and has come to be a symbol of America for many. Join us as we
explore the RCBL's role in our area.
