4-H Centennial Celebration Temporary Exhibit
(posted 10-2-02)
The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society presents an exhibit titled
"4-H Centennial Celebration: A History of Local 4-H." This exhibit will
lead visitors through local 4-H history with trophies, photographs, scrapbooks,
club flags, club quilt, signs, and written history. "I pledge my head
to clearer thinking…" This is part of the 4-H pledge that was recited
by persons joining 4-H. At one time, this was one out of every six persons
born in the United States. For 100 years the 4-H brought together youth
from farms and cities, taught them, supported them, encouraged them, and
guided them to adulthood. From its beginnings as a boys and girls club,
the 4-H provided agricultural education youth through its "learning by
doing" model. Whether you were in the 4-H or not, this exhibit will bring
up fond memories of growing up in the Valley. Do you remember sleeping
in the barn, staying up late finishing a dress hem, or working on a presentation?
Come to the Shenandoah Valley Folk Art and Heritage Center and join us
in saluting the 4-H. Shenandoah Valley Folk Art and Heritage Center is
located at Bowman Road and High Streets, Dayton, Virginia, 22821. Open
Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM. Phone 540-879-2616 for more information
or check the website at www.HeritageCenter.com.
