Historical Sketch. In 1970 Parnassus and Mt. Solon
Charge were attached to the Harrisonburg District for 1970-71.
At the time Parnassus UMC had a membership of 133, an average
attendance at worship of 65, and a Sunday school enrollment of
142 with average attendance 97.
Cherished Memories. Frances Stuart (Hawkins) Fix, 92, of
Parnassus, passed away peacefully at her home May 16, 2014. She was
born in Verona to Lurty Preston Hawkins and Kathleen Elizabeth
(Snapp) Hawkins Sep. 2, 1921. Frances served Augusta Co. Schools as
a school secretary for more than 20 years and was an active member of
Parnassus UMC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walker H. “Mutt” Fix;
sister Ann H. Bennington; brothers Warren P. and A. Bertram Hawkins; and a sister-in-law, Helene S. Hawkins.
She is survived by daughters Janet Bell and husband Charlie of Parnassus, Kitty Cook and husband Benny of Mt.
Sidney, and Ruthie Snyder and husband Rick of Churchville; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and
two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother-in-law Phil Bennington of Weyers Cave, sister-in-
law Mary Jo Hawkins of Churchville; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. A graveside service was
held May 19th in Parnassus UMC Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Vicki Barb and the Rev. Paul O’Gorek. A
memorial service was held June 1st in Parnassus UMC, after which the family received friends. In lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions were to be made to the Churchville Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 608, Churchville,
VA 24421; or to the Parnassus Cemetery fund, c/o Mrs. Betty Jean Young, 3050 Scenic Hwy., Mt. Solon, VA
22843. Bear Funeral Home is serving the family.
On Aug. 13, 2010, Elmer A. Terry, Jr., was received into heaven from his farm in Parnassus. He was
born Oct. 21, 1943, in Harrisonburg to the late Elmer Terry, Sr., and Wilda Emswiler Terry. He was united in
marriage July 30, 1969, in Boulder Colorado to his loving wife Betty J. Terry, who survives. He was a member
of the Parnassus UMC. He graduated in 1962 from Broadway High School. He served as a Paratrooper in the
U.S. Army 82nd Air Borne Division; during this time he was stationed in Germany. He resided in Colorado for
4 years after he received his honorable discharge, before settling onto his farm in Virginia. He loved and
appreciated life, nature, and his family and friends. He was a truck driver, farmer, hunter, story teller, and
devoted his life to helping others. He had a true value of life and simple living. In addition to his wife he is
survived by two children and their families: Bruce and Angie Terry of Weyers Cave; and Eric and Tina Evers of
