funeral exercises for the venerable bishop were conducted by ministers of the Lutheran, Methodist, and
Episcopal churches is a significant witness to the breadth of his sympathies.” He is interred at Old Otterbein,

Great and good man of God! An honor to his church and country! One of the greatest scholars and
divines that ever came to America, or born in it! Forty years have I known the retiring modesty of this man of
God, towering majestic above his fellows in learning, wisdom, and grace, yet seeking to be known only to God

OW: Harmonius “Henry” Ow became a member of Conference in 1810; ordained 1817. A “Herman” Ow
attended Conference in 1814, when he was authorized to administer the sacraments, 1816, and 1822 (the
same?). A “Harman Owr” was member of Pa. Conf. of 1833. Pa. Conf. Archives list Johann Gerhardus
Hermanus [Harmonius] Ow (b. Feb. 17, 1778, Oberisen, Germany; d. July 20, 1861, Cherry Tree, Indiana
County, Pa.; mar. Catherine Gilbert, Christiana Elizabeth Faust, and Rebeca [sic] Wilson) as being licensed in
1810 and ordained in 1814, serving as Presiding Elder, Huntingdon District, 1836-27; and charter member of
Allegheny Conf. in 1839. Harmonius Ow is interred at Stiffler Church Cemetery, Berringer, Pa. [Funkhouser
1921, p. 124, 142 (both “Henry Ow); and 230, 231, 234, 241 (all “Herman Ow”)]; [Glovier 1965, p. 87]; and
[Lycoming 2013].

PALLAS: George Pallas was listed (with a question mark following his name) as present for the
Conference of 1828; otherwise unknown. [Funkhouser 1921, p. 239]

PARDO (PARDOE): Gerald L. Pardo (Pardoe) (b. Mar. 20, 1913; d. Apr. 15, 1989; mar. Phyllis M.
Woolford) served Pleasant Valley Circuit, 1943-46, along with Harriston Circuit, 1943-45. He received his
quarterly conference license in Allegheny Conf. in 1939, conference license in 1942, and ordination in 1958.
He also served Mahaffey, 1940-43; Sidman-St. Michael, 1946-49; McKeesport First, 1949-57; Paradise, 1957-
65; Dubois Trinity, 1965-70; and McDonald, 1970-77, after which he retired (Western Pa. Conf.).

PARLETT: Isaac T. Parlett (1829-1899) became a member of Conference and licensed to
preach in 1876 and ordained in 1879. He served Bloomery Circuit, 1880-81; North River
Mission, 1885-86; and Front Royal Mission, 1886-87. He joined the Old Constitution
Denomination in 1891. In 1879 he reported as a local preacher that he had preached 17
sermons and was superintendent of a Sabbath school. The picture is from [Glovier 1965, p.
69-70], taken in 1886. From the Clarke Courier, Aug. 23, 1899 [Vol. 31, No. 27, p. 3] and The
Mail (Hagerstown), Aug 25, 1899: Rev. Isaac T. Parlett, a retired minister of the United
Brethren Church, died at his residence near Winchester after a protracted illness, aged 70
years. He is survived by two sons, Rev. John H. Parlett, of this [Washington] county [Md.], and A. T. Parlett,
of Martinsburg, and five daughters. His health broke down under the strain he underwent during trial of a
slander suit brought by his son, J. H. Parlett (see below), against John B. Fries, which was tried in the Circuit
Court in Mar. 1898. [Funkhouser 1921, p. 142; see also pp. 127, 274, 276, 278, 281, 283-284, 286, 288,

PARLETT: John Henry Parlett (1852-1933) the son of Isaac T. Parlett (see above), was born in Frederick
County, Va., in 1852. Early in life he joined the U.B. Church and entered the Ministry. He became a member
of Va. Conference and licensed to preach in 1878 and was ordained there 1881. He connected himself with
the Radical (Old Constitution) branch of the Church in 1891 and served in that capacity until 1928, when he
joined the Va. Conf. of the Liberal Branch again. Rev. Parlett served Highland Circuit, 1878-79; Berkeley
Circuit, 1879-80; Front Royal Circuit, 1881-82; Clark Mission, 1884-85; and West Frederick Circuit, 1930-31.
He died in 1933 at age 81 and was buried near Winchester, Va. His memoir is provided in Section II.A
(below). He married Sarah Jane Stepp (b. 1857). [Funkhouser 1921, p. 142; see also pp. 127, 276-278,

PATTERSON: George Patterson was ordained in 1828 and served Woodstock Circuit and was Presiding
Elder (Virginia), 1832-33. He attended his last Conference in 1842 and died in 1843 or early 1844.

PAUL: S. W. Paul was listed as a visiting minister at the Conferences of 1897 and 1898. He served
Roanoke, 1922-24. Rev. S. W. Paul of Chattanooga, Tenn., was listed in the 1911 U.B. Yearbook [p. 64] as a
member of the General Board of Education for 1909-13.
