Volume 6 Relation of U.B/EUB Virginia Conferences to Shenandoah University Dec. 26, 2013

the Shenandoah Loyalty Fund was inaugurated in 1948. This fund receives gifts from alumni and
interested friend, and it contributed some $3,000 to the School during its first 2 years. Among other
significant contributions to the School in the late 1940s was a fine pipe organ donated and installed by
Mr. Frank Snoddy, an alumnus of the Conservatory of Music.

Looking Forward in 1950. The Virginia Conference has the distinction of being the only EUB
Conference that is solely responsible for the support of a college. During its history, it tried
unsuccessfully to attract the support of other conferences in the East Region. Virginia Conference not
only supports Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music, but it is also most liberal in its gifts to
Lebanon Valley College and Bonebrake Seminary It was been a terrific struggle to keep the College
solvent and in operation.

Many times the financial outlook was so dark that many advocated closing the doors of the
School, but each time there has been a leader to rally the support of this Conference of but 20,000
members, to see the needs and provide for them. It has meant tremendous personal sacrifice in many
instances, and it is now evident that the Virginia Conference cannot, by itself, adequately support this
School.

Additional fund musts be secured if Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music is to
continue to render the same fine educational opportunities that it has in the first 75 years of its history.
It is earnestly hoped that this next General Conference will present some plan whereby this financial
burden will be equalized among the various conferences.

The history of the College and Conservatory points to one outstanding fact—the institution has
always attempted to keep pace with the growing educational needs of the county. In 1875 the need for
an education on the high-school level was met. In the following years, the various departments were
enlarged and others added to offer the best education possible. When the state provided public high
school facilities, the College withdrew from this field and enlarged and emphasized its junior college
work to meet that need. The vision of producing an adequate School of Music for Virginia and the
region was brought to fulfillment with the incorporation of the Conservatory of Music in 1937.

The College must now develop into a 4-year college if it is to continue to meet the educational
needs of our young people. Many of our U.B. youth, as well as other deserving students from the
southeastern portion of our county, would matriculate to Shenandoah if it provided 4 years of college
work and was able to grant the standard college degrees. This situation makes it imperative that
Shenandoah College be granted authority and funds to enlarge to a standard 4-year college of liberal arts
and sciences. It must offer equal advantages in these fields as the Conservatory now offers in the field
of music. Since it is the only EUB College located south of the Mason-and-Dixon Line, it is of vital
importance in providing for the educational needs of the youth in this area of our great nation.

Shenandoah College and Shenandoah Conservatory of Music have, in the past 75 years, educated
men and women who have gone into the fields of business, the Ministry of the Church, into the schools
to teach our children, into the shops, the homes, and even foreign countries to teach others of Christ and
of better ways of living. Shenandoah alumni have served with distinction wherever they have gone.
With added facilities and adequate support, Shenandoah will be able to better educate our youth and
continue to be a blessing and benefit to the EUB Church.
