6. Breneman’s U.B. Church [Augusta County; 1880s-1890s]
Conference Reports. Breneman’s was a preaching appointment on Augusta Circuit as early as
1886, when Pleasant Grove and Breneman’s were detached from Augusta Circuit and Whitesel’s from
Dayton Circuit to form Cross Keys Circuit with the other churches of South River Mission. This
reference in the 1886 Annual Conference Minutes is the only mentioned of Breneman’s Church found.
This may be the same as the first U.B. church in Waynesboro that closed around the turn of the century.
Table 14, below, identifies some early pastors for Augusta and South River Circuits. In the years
before 1921, membership data was recorded only for the charge and not for the individual churches and
other appointments. There are no records of Breneman’s when churches were explicitly identified in
1921 and beyond. Note that “Year Ends 1880” means conference year 1879-80 and that the data were
reported at the 1880 Annual Conference. Thus, C. H. Crowell served Bluff Dale (and other churches of
Augusta Circuit) 1879-81, and G. J. Roudabush, 1881-83.
