Stained Glass Windows in the Churches of Rockingham
Dayton Presbyterian Church
Dayton, Va. High Street near north end.
This traditional Presbyterian brick church was built in 1898. The congregation dissolved in 1969.
In 2007 a Quaker congregation purchased the building. Since the “Friends” believe in worshiping in a very
simple environment, there was much discussion about removing the stained glass windows from the
sanctuary. They decided to leave the windows because of the historical significance and community
concern.
A large stained window faces the street and at the other end of the sanctuary the old altar area
contains two stained windows that are now blocked off from the back not allowing any light to pass
through. Each side has stained windows along it.
