Stained Glass Windows in the Churches of Harrisonburg

John Wesley United Methodist Church

Sterling and Effinger Streets.

This historic congregation dates back to October 1865. For many years they occupied a fine
temple type church on Liberty Street. Ground was broken for the present church in 1978. The stained
glass windows were all moved from the Liberty Street church and the shape altered from lancet shape to
rectangles. The top lancet sections have been framed and mounted on the walls of the parish hall. A
picture of the old church shows the original location of the windows. The earliest of the windows have the
“torch’ motif: lilies, crown and cross and the wheat; the others date after 1940.
