Stained Glass Windows in the Churches of Harrisonburg
First Church of the Brethren
315 South Dogwood Drive.
The congregation, beginning as a mission in 1902, was organized as an independent church in
1909. The dedication of the present church building was held on May 7, 1978. Two stained glass
windows were moved from the former church building located at 70 South High Street. A series of ten
windows were designed for the new church, consisting of abstract religious symbols. Certain of the
symbols are of particular importance to the Brethren faith: the sword beaten into plowshares reminds us
that the Brethren Church is historically a “peace” church, the cup of cold water is a symbol of Brethren
service, and the towel and basin are part of the love feast service.
