CHURCHES

1. SUBJECT:
Brenneman’s Church.

2. LOCATION:
Near Edom, Virginia, on the Edom-Broadway Road, west of Harrisonburg, Virginia, on State Route 260 and
west of U.S. Route 11.

3. DATE:
About 1831.

4. OWNERS:
Eastern Mennonite Congregation.

5. DESCRIPTION:
The church building has been remodeled but retains the architectural features.

6. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
The first bishop of the Church was Peter Burkholder, grandfather of the Rev. A.B. Burkholder. He died in 1846.
David Burkholder was the father of the Venerable Rev. A.B. Burkholder. The late Bishop L.J. Heatwole, has
been succeeded by Rev. S.H. Rhodes. This Church was founded by the members of the Mennonite faith from
Pennsylvania, who came to Rockingham County with the German Migration following the close of the French
and Indian War in 1763.
