Beulah Maxine Shifflett, 78, of Harrisonburg died Jan. 16, 2000, at Victorian Haven in Elkton, where she
had been a resident the past several months. Mrs. Shifflett was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Barboursville, a daughter
of the late Alexander G. and Lucy Ann Lam Watson. She retired from Imco after 25 years and attended Asbury
UMC. Her husband, Clarence Vurnis Shifflett, died Feb. 29, 1988. Survivors include three sons, Charles Randall
Shifflett of Harrisonburg, Kenneth J. Shifflett of Laurel, Md., and Gerald Nolan Shifflett of Chester; a brother,
Paul Watson of Norfolk; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The funeral was conducted Jan. 19th by the
Rev. Wayne Wright at Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial was in Elk Run Cemetery in

Iscie B. “Nannie” Shifflet, 83, of Harrisonburg died Apr. 6, 1983,at Rockingham Memorial Hospital,
where she had been a patient since Feb. 18. Mrs. Shifflet was born Mar. 12, 1899, \at Cherry Grove, W.Va., a
daughter of the late Adam and Cora Lambert Bennett. She was a member of the Harrisburg Hose Co. 4 auxiliary
and Asbury UMC. She was raised in the Mount Clinton area and moved to Harrisonburg after her marriage in
Mar. 1916 to Raleigh M. Shifflet, who died Sept. 2, 1949. Surviving are a daughter, Irene Peterman of
Harrisonburg, with whom Mrs. Shifflet had been living; a son, R. William Shifflet, also of Harrisonburg; a sister,
Rhoda Long of Mount Crawford; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service was
conducted Aug. 8th in Weavers Mennonite Cemetery by the Rev. Thomas L. Coffman. In lieu of flowers, the
family said contributions be made to the Hose Co. 4 auxiliary, 210 E. Rock St.; Harrisonburg.
Raleigh William Shiflett “Bill” Shifflet, 71, of Harrisonburg, died June 4, 1990, at Rockingham Memorial
Hospital, where he had been a patient for 2 weeks. He had been ill for the past year. He was born July 30, 1918,
in Harrisonburg and was the son of the late Raleigh and Iscie Bennett Shifflet. Mr. Shifflet was a retired
Harrisonburg auditor and a member of Asbury UMC. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In 1941 he
married the former Gladys Joseph, who died in 1979. In 1980 he married the former Audrey J. Franklin, who
survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Linda S. Hayden of McLean; a stepdaughter, Cathy Hall
of Austin, Tex.; two stepsons, Jeffrey L. Franklin of Richmond and John A. Franklin of Easton, Pennsylvania; a
sister, Irene Peterman of Harrisonburg; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. The Revs. Donald H.
Traylor and Thomas L. Reynolds Jr. conducted the funeral June 6h in the chapel of Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral
Home in Harrisonburg. The casket was closed. A private entombment followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens
Mausoleum. Memorial donations were to be made to either Rockingham Memorial Hospital Hospice or
Rockingham Memorial Hospital Regional Cancer Center, 235 Cantrell Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
Dr. William Hanna Talbot, Sr. 92, died Jan. 31, 2012, at Oak Lea Nursing Home in Harrisonburg. Dr.
Talbot was born on Oct. 27, 1919, in Tsing-Kiang-Pu, China and was the son of the late Addison Alexander and
Katherine Gay Bird Talbot. On Sep. 23, 1944, he married Evelyn F. Talbot who survives. Dr. Talbot grew up in
China, where his parents were missionaries with the Presbyterian Church. For high school, he would travel to a
boarding school in Korea where he played ice hockey. He loved travelling with family to show them inspirational
sights from India’s Taj Mahal, to cathedrals in Europe, and to the Himalayan Mountains. Dr. Talbot had a
lifelong love of photography, reading, and sailing, and he built his own small sailboat. In the Valley, he loved
going to the mountains to hike and have dinner with his family. In later years, he and Evelyn would walk to a
scenic view and spend hours reading. He was a member of Asbury UMC and the Harrisonburg Rotary Club,
where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a graduate of the Presbyterian College and the Medical College of
Virginia, receiving his M.D. Degree in 1945. He was board certified in Clinical and Anatomical Pathology. He
became the Pathologist for Rockingham Memorial Hospital in 1957 and retired in 1989. He was a consultant at
Page Memorial Hospital in Luray and the hospital in Petersburg, W.Va., for many years. He also was a member
of the Medical Society of Virginia, Rockingham Co. Medical Society, American Society of Clinical Pathologists,
American Association of Blood Banks, Virginia Society of Pathology, and the American Society of Cytology.
Dr. Talbot was a Visiting Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology at the University of Virginia for many years
and published numerous articles within his field of studies. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and later
was a Lt. Commander in the Navy. In addition to his wife he is survived by three children and their spouses:
William H. Jr. and his wife, Lynn Talbot of Anniston, Ala., Bonnie Talbot Leavitt and her husband, Warren of
Harrisonburg, and Keith G. Talbot and his wife, Lori Talbot of Bridgeton, N.J.; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-
grandchildren. A memorial service was held Feb. 4th at Asbury UMC with Pastor Kathleen Overby Webster
officiating. Private burial was in Woodbine Cemetery. Memorial contributions were to be sent to Asbury UMC
