9. Mt. Zion UMC (Mount Solon)

Historical Sketch. In 1930 Stokesville MECS merged with Mt. Zion MECS as Mt. Zion MECS
[Wrenn 2014].

Cherished Memories. Edward Carl Burtner, 83, of Mount Solon, died Dec. 24, 1995, born July 7,
1912, to the late Homer Paul and Anna Stover Burtner, he resided in the home of his birth until the day of his
death. A farmer, he was a member of the Mount Zion UMC and a member of the North River Ruritan Club. He
was on the Augusta Co. Board of Supervisors from 1960-1967, on the Augusta Co. Planning Commission from
1968-1973, on the Augusta Co. Department of Social Services Board from 1964-1968, on the Augusta Co. School
Board Selection Committee from 1971-1988, on the Augusta Co. Redistricting Commission in 1968 and 1970,
and a former trustee of the Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music. He was preceded in death by his
brothers, Marion, Albert and Byard, sisters, Mabel Crosson, Madge Wilfong, Margaret Smith and Vada Burtner.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wilma Craun Burtner; four children and their families, Judy Burtner of
Richmond; Charles, Patsy and Nathaniel Aligood of Lexington; L. Scott, Patti, Joshua and Hannah Burtner of Mt.
Solon; and E. York, Carolyn, Bradlee and Wesley Burtner of Winchester, Ky.; a brother, Roscoe Burtner of
Blacksburg; sisters, Olga Hawkins of Harrisonburg Beda McMahan of Sebring, Fla.; many nieces and nephews as
well as many friends. A funeral service was conducted Dec. 27th in Mount Zion UMC, Mt. Solon. The Rev. John
Haynes and Rev. Eicky Woodson officiated. Burial followed in Dayton Cemetery. The family received friends at
Johnson Funeral Service, Bridgewater. Memorial contributions were to be given to Mount Solon Rescue Squad,
in care of Carson Fifer, Rt. 1, Box 350, Mount Solon, Va. 24843; or Clark Co. Public Library, Main St.,

Historical Note. Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Verona (formerly, MEC of the Central
Jurisdiction) closed ca. 1965 [Wrenn 2014].
