Shenandoah District. To the Virginia Annual Conference, in Conference assembled: Brother
Chairman and Members of the Conference, I am thankful to the Lord that it is my privilege to render an
account to you of another year’s work in the Master’s vineyard. The District is made up of 15 fields of
labor all of which were supplied at your last annual sitting, except two: Shenandoah City and Madison.
Madison was supplied soon after Conference by the appointment of Rev. J. W. Maiden. Shenandoah
City was without a supply for a few months, by disappointment. Rev. J. W. Walters, assisted by Rev. A.
Hoover, was employed for the remainder of the year. I was at work on the District every Sabbath,
except one, from the close of our last Conference until the last of January. Since then, I have not been
able, on account of my health, to work; but the brethren were very kind and held all the regular
quarterlies for me. God bless them!

On most of the charges God has favored us with revivals, and as the result more than 600 have
united with the Church. Three houses of worship have been dedicated and paid for; another one is now
under roof and will be finished soon. The parsonage at Lacey Springs has been made ready for
occupancy, and is now occupied by the pastor of that charge. Our work at Harrisonburg is moving on
nicely. A good class has been organized, a flourishing Sabbath school, and a Young Peoples Christian
Union second to none, as I think, on the District. The foundation of a house of worship has been
completed. It is hoped that a house will be built on this foundation during the coming summer that will
be an honor to our Denomination.

I am sorry to say that most of the preachers are behind in their salary, partly on account of the
hard times and partly for a lack of organization and development in this respect. When will our people
get out of the old ruts? I am glad, however, to say that more missionary money has been paid on the
District this year than any year to my knowledge in its history; but still there is great room for
improvement. Shenandoah Institute, located in this District, is doing well. It is at least one-fourth larger
this year than it was last. Yet it ought to be twice as large as it is, and could be if its friends would only
work for it as they ought. I held during the year 42 quarterlies in person, and 16 by proxy. Sermons
preached 105. Salary received, $585.03; presents, $17. Church expenses, $19.33; house rent, $50; paid
for repairs on district parsonage, and interest on debt, $44.33. Total received for the year as salary and
