J. W. Howe, Presiding Elder of Potomac District, read his report, and made some remarks.
Twenty-six years ago he joined Conference near this place; but four persons are now present who were
members at that time.

Potomac District. Dear brethren: I am thankful to our Heavenly Father that I am permitted this
day to present my annual report of Potomac District. Twelve fields of labor, composed of 6 circuits,
3 stations, 2 mission stations, and 1 mission, all regularly filled. At our last Conference, Rev. W. B.
Evers, placed in charge of Vancleavesville circuit, resigned early in the year; I tried to supply it in
connection with other works, but was not successful, so nothing has been accomplished during the year.
On most of the other fields we have had some success; several excellent revivals, but not that degree of
prosperity that we desired to see. In some places on the District, our people have become rather cold
and formal, but I think the District is looking up. There will be an increase in Telescopes, but I don’t
think our Sabbath school literature is as much appreciated as it ought to be. Two excellent houses of
worship were dedicated during the year, both free of debt.

The preachers have all worked hard and have all treated me kindly, for which they have my
sincere thanks. I could not give the District the attention in the early part of the year that I desired,
owing to affliction in my family, but with all our affliction the Lord has been my only refuge. I held
39 quarterly meetings in person and 5 by proxy, 44 in all. Salary received, $507.35; time employed,
12 months. Respectfully submitted, J. W. Howe, P.E.

Shenandoah District. Dear brethren: By the kind Providence of our common Father and
Benefactor, the close of another year has been reached and, with each one of you I submit a brief
account of my stewardship and the condition of the field assigned me at our last session. The district is
composed of 15 fields of labor, divided as follows: 1 station, 1 mission station, 7 circuits, and
6 missions. The following changes occurred during the year: L. O. Burtner resigned Rockbridge circuit
March 21. Brother A. S. Castle was employed in his stead. On the 8th of May, just as the sun was
sinking behind the Western hills, Rev. J. E. Widmeyer, in full prospect of immortality, passed from
