HUMPHREYS: J. G. Humphreys became a member of Conference in 1874; dismissed for nonattendance at
Conference and failure to meet committee on course of reading, 1877. [Funkhouser 1921, p. 139; see also

HUTLIN: Thomas Hutlin became a member of Conference in 1822. Member of Pa. Conf. of 1833.
[Funkhouser 1921, p. 125, 139; and 241 (“Huston”)] and [Glovier 1965, p. 88]
HUTZLER (HUTSLER): Charles W. Hutzler was born at Whitehall, Va., in 1853, and was
licensed in 1877. He joined the Conference in 1878 and was ordained in 1881. In 1879 he
reported as a local preacher that he had preached 5 times. Berkeley circuit, 1880-83, was his
only charge in Va. Conference. He transferred to the East Pa. Conf. in 1883 [Funkhouser 1921,
p. 139] and there served East Harrisburg, 1883-86. He served Shippensburg (Pa. Conf.), 1886-
87; Millville, Ohio (Ohio Conf.), 1887-89; Lancaster Covenant, 1889-93; Harrisburg Derry
Street, 1893-99; Philadelphia Central Mission, 1899-1900; Mount Joy Circuit, 1900-01; Beaver
Falls (Allegheny Conf.), 1901-03; and Hollsopple (Allegheny Conf.), 1903-05. He returned to
Va. Conf. to serve Harrisonburg Station, 1905-06; Williamsport, 1906-13; Martinsburg Second,
1913-14; Roanoke, 1914-15; and Keyser, 1915-16. He also served Lemasters, 1916-17, and
Chewsville, 1917-18. After 1918 he remained a local preacher. He died Mar. 3, 1919, in Martinsburg, W.Va.,

ICKES: LeRoy Elmer Ickes (b. Feb. 5, 1921; d. Dec. 11, 2009), son of Elmer and Elizabeth Ickes, served
Mt. Horeb Circuit, 1943-45. He attended Shenandoah College, 1942-43 (Class of 1944); Bridgewater College,
1943-45; and Bonebrake [United] Theological Seminary, 1945-48, where he served Nashville/Waterhouse
Church in Miami Ohio Conf., 1945-49. His first quarterly conference license was in 1942; he joined Allegheny
Conf. and was licensed there in 1946; and he was ordained there in 1948. He served Mount Hope, 1949-51;
Johnstown Bethany, 1951-62; and transferred to Western Pa. Conf. of The Methodist Church in 1962. He was
an associate at Wilkinsburg Park Avenue, 1962-64 (ending Feb. 1, 1964); Fairview, 1964 (beginning Feb. 1)
to 1967; Monaca, 1967-73; Clark Trinity, 1973-80; and Ridgeway, 1980-84. He retired in 1984. In
retirement he has served Portsmouth Wesley, 1984-86, McDermott UMC ( McDermott, Ohio), 1986-93;
associate, Wellersburg, 1996-99; and Portsmouth United Church of Christ, 1999-2001. In 2002 he was living
with his wife Faye Virginia (Burton) in Delaware, Ohio. He is buried at Radnor Cemetery in Delaware.

JACKSON: David Jackson became a member of Conference in 1835; local preacher; gave up his license;
died at Churchville, Va.; father of Rev. William Andrew Jackson (see below). [Funkhouser 1921, pp. 126, 137,

JACKSON: William Andrew Jackson (b. Dec. 31, 1828, Pleasant Mill, Va.; d. Jan. 20, 1910; mar. Alice
Snook, 1839-1894), son of David Jackson (see above), was granted quarterly license by Winchester Circuit in
1858; was licensed and became a member of Va. Conf. in 1860. He served Frederick, 1859-60; Hagerstown,
1860-61; and Augusta, 1861-62 (did not finish the year). He apparently transferred to Pa. Conf. in 1863, but
served Shape Gap Circuit, 1861-62 in Allegheny Conf. and was ordained there in 1863. In Allegheny, Pa., and
East Pa. Conferences he served Shippensburg Circuit, 1863-64; St. Thomas Circuit, 1864-65; New Paris,
1869-71; Presiding Elder, 1872-73; Presiding Elder, East District, 1872-73; Westmoreland Circuit, 1874-75;
New Paris, 1880-82; Presiding Elder, Johnsontown District, 1883-85; Somerset, 1885-86; Rockwood, 1886-
88; Port Matilda, 1888-89; Stormstown, 1889-91 (resigned in Dec. 1990); withdrew to serve another
denomination, 1891-93; New Paris, 1893-95; Hustontown, 1895-96; Middletown, 1896-97; Barren Run,
1897-98; Berlin, 1898-1900; Hustontown, 1901-02; and Hilliard, 1904-05, after which he retired.

JAMES: William James became a member of Conference and licensed to preach in 1857 and served
Parkersburg Mission, 1857-58. He transferred to Parkersburg Conference. A Rev. William James (b. Sep. 11,
1811, Russellville, Ky.; d. Nov. 14, 1895, Kansas City, Mod.; mar. Mary Ann Varble) became as Methodist
minister in 1832 and is buried at Oak Grove, Mo. [Funkhouser 1921, p. 129, 139, 258-259; Glovier 1965,
p. 89]
JARRELL: J. Temple Jarrell (June 25, 1911, Kennedyville, Md.; d. July 14, 1955; mar.
Esther Romaine Daugherty) served Mt. Horeb Circuit, 1933-34. He was granted license to
preach in Pa. Conf. in 1932 (recommended by Baltimore Salem) and ordained there in 1937.
He was a student at Bonebrake [Unite] Theological Seminary, 1934-37, and served as an
assistant for Fort McKinley of Miami Ohio Conf. During 1937-55 he was appointed to Spring
Run; and in 1955 made executive secretary for the York County Council of Churches. He died in
1955, interred at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, Pa. The picture is from [Holdcraft 1938,
p. 343]. The obituary for his wife, who was the only child of Rev. George C. Daughertry, Pa.
