CAPLINGER: Ernest Bruce Caplinger (b. Dec. 11, 1895, Criders, Va.; d. Feb. 7, 1983, Silver Spring, Md.),
the son of Jacob Harvey Caplinger and Susan Virginia (Dove) Caplinger, was a native of Rockingham County,
Va. He was converted and united with the U.B. Church early in life. He is a graduate (Class of 1923) of
Shenandoah College, Dayton, Va., and of Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa. He joined Va. Conf. and was
licensed to preach in 1921, when he was a student at Shenandoah Collegiate Institute, Dayton, Va.
[Funkhouser 1921, p. 310]. He was married to Miss Kathleen Rebecca Kohr on Oct. 12, 1924, in Lohr’s
Memorial U.B. Church, Hanover, Pa. He was ordained in 1929. He served the following circuits in Va. Conf.:
Pleasant Valley, Toms Brook, Edinburg, Broadway, Churchville, Westernport, Riverton, and Augusta. After
39 years of service, he retired in 1960. Rev. Caplinger, for his second marriage, was wed to Mrs. Sarah H.
Zapata, R.N., of Cleveland, Ohio, Sep. 26, 1960, at 7 p.m. at the home of the officiating minister, the Rev.
David F. Glovier, “Sunrise,” Staunton, Va. The Caplingers resided in Cleveland, Ohio. Rev. Caplinger is buried
in Pisgah Cemetery, Mt. Sidney, Va. His memorial is provided in Section II.A (below). [Funkhouser 1921,

CAPLINGER: Kathleen Rebecca (Kohr) Caplinger (b. Jan. 16, 1898; d. Aug. 23, 1958). She graduated
from Bonebrake Theological Seminary in 1920 and from Shenandoah College in 1924; she received her
Quarterly License to Preach the Gospel from the Edinburg Quarterly Conference in 1929 at the hands of
Conference Superintendent J. H. Brunk, joined the Conference in 1933, and was ordained in 1935 by Bishop
G. D. Batdorf. She was married to the Rev. E. B. Caplinger on Oct. 12, 1924, and served with him at Toms
Brook, Edinburg, Broadway, Churchville, Westernport, Riverton, Reliance, and Augusta Charge. Their two
daughters are Mary Elizabeth and Rebecca Anne. She died on Aug. 23, 1958, at the parsonage in Mt. Sidney,
Va., and was buried at Mt. Pisgah Church. [Glovier 1965, pp. 96, 135] Her memorial is provided in Section

CARTER: Bishop Dr. Thomas Coke Carter, 31st bishop of the UBIC,
presided over Va. Conf. in 1908 and 1911-12. He joined Va. Conf. in 1900,
having visited the Conference in 1898 and 1899 and having been received as
an ordained minister from the East Tennessee Conference. He served
Roanoke, 1898-1900; and Shenandoah City, 1900-01. In 1901 Dr. Carter
was granted an open transfer by Va. Conf. He was consecrated as bishop in
1905. He dedicated Greenway Church (Reliance Charge in the Winchester
District) in 1899 and the new church for Martinsburg Mission Station in 1912.
He died in 1916. His memoir is provided in Section II.A (below). The picture

CARVER: Michael Carver was licensed to exhort in 1825 and attended the Conference of 1826 as an
exhorter. Nothing else is known. [Funkhouser 1921, pp. 237-238]
CASSADY: Chaplain Florian Wendell Cassady, also son of Virgil E. and Alma (Feaster)
Cassady, was born June 3, 2024 at Petersburg, W.Va. He graduated from Petersburg High
School, attended Shenandoah College (Class of 1938), and graduated from Lebanon Valley
College in 1940. He received the B.D. degree from United Seminary in 1944, and after being
ordained in that same year at the Seminary he went into the U.S. Navy as Chaplain. He
received the S.T.M. degree from Harvard in 1955 and at present holds the rank of
Commander in the Navy. On Dec. 25, 1940, Chaplain F. W. Cassady was married to Miss
Evelyn Mae Seylar and to this union have been born two children, Michael Elwood and
Gretchen Seylar. He has seen duty in the Navy aboard various ships, at naval air stations,
training centers, shipyards, and hospitals. He has been on duty in the Pacific, South Sea Islands, Africa, both
coasts of America and in the Canal Zone. CDR Cassady died Jan. 3, 1997, and is buried at Fort Rosencrans
National Cemetery in San Diego, Calif. [Glovier 1965, p. 322, from which the picture is taken; see also pp.
91, 257, 259, 270]
CASSADY: Chaplain Kermit Ralph Cassady, son of Virgil E. and Alma N (Feaster)
Cassady, was born Feb. 7, 1918, at Petersburg, W.Va. He graduated from Petersburg High
School; attended Shenandoah College; and graduated from Berea College (A.B., Philosophy,
Class of 1941) and from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He joined Va. Conf. in
1941 and was ordained at United Seminary in 1944. On Apr. 26, 1941, Rev. K. R. Cassady
was married to Miss Theda Brisco. They have one daughter, Linda. Chaplain K. R. Cassady
entered the U.S. Navy as a Chaplain in 1944 and has served on numerous assignments.
