SHEETS: Joseph Howard Sheets was born Nov. 11, 1912, at Brooklyn, Iowa. He was
converted and united with the Mt. Pisgah U.B. Church near Mt. Sidney, Augusta County, Va., in
1921. He married Miss Pauletta Horn Nov. 10, 1936. They have two children, Mary Jo and
Charles Bernard. He was educated in Augusta County public schools, Shenandoah College
(Class of 1934), and Bridgewater College. He served Bayard Charge, 1936-37. He has since
1937 been active as a local preacher and engages in large farm operations. His address in
1965 was Mt. Solon, Va. [Glovier 1965, p. 301, from which the picture was taken; see also
pp. 222, 297, 319]
SHERMAN: Delmas D. Sherman taught school for a number of years, quite a few of them
in a one-room school in the mountainous area on the Virginia-West Virginia border. During
part of that time he began as a probationer preaching in some small mission churches around
Wardensville, W.Va. After retiring from school teaching, he has accepted full-time work in Va.
Conf. Mr. Sherman was on the Antioch Charge until it was divided, and since that time has
been the pastor of the Riverton Charge consisting of six churches. Mr. Sherman is married and
has children. He died in 1966 at age 58 and is buried at Cemetery Home near Mathias, W.Va.
He served Wardensville Circuit, 1953-1961; Antioch Circuit, 1961-63; and Riverton Circuit,
1963-65. His memoir is provided in Section II.A (below). [Glovier 1965, p. 297, from which the picture is

SHICKLE: H. W. Shickle served New Creek Circuit, 1927-28; West Frederick Circuit, 1928-30 and 1938-
39; nothing else is known.
SHIELDS: Richard Shields, a Ministerial Student, served Harrisonburg Charge as a Student Intern under
Rev. Robert L. Bridgers, 1967-68.
SHINGLETON: Eldon Gale Shingleton served Antioch the last 3 months of 1955-56, while a student at
Shenandoah College, and Blairton-Greensburg Circuit, 1956-59. He graduated from Shenandoah in 1956 with
a Junior College Diploma. He married Ruth Richardson. He was granted Probationer’s License by Va. Conf. in
Sep. 1956. Received his B.Div. at Evangelical Theological Seminary, Naperville, Ill. Resigned in 1959 (the
final 3 months of 1958-59 was supplied by J. P. Sheesley). In 1987 he was appointed pastor at St. Johns
UMC in Parsons, W.Va. In 2002 he was a retired UMC pastor living in Ravenswood, Va., with his wife Ruth,
who graduated from Shenandoah College in 1956. Their children are Sherri Hagar, odd, and Sabrina Cogar.
During 1966-69 he was pastor of Oak Park Church of the Brethren in Oakland, Md. He is listed as a graduate
of Indiana Central College (Class of 1962) and in 1969 minister of Central Church of the Brethren in Roanoke,
Va. In Aug. 1971 a Rev. Eldon G. Shingleton officiated at the funeral services of Lela Clasey at the Church of
the Brethren in Campaign, Ill. In Mason County, W.Va., he conducted funeral services for Cecil Sayre at
Trinity UMC in Oct. 1995 at Point Pleasant; for Talmadge Stewart in Oct. 1995 at New Haven; and Lily Stevens
in Dec. 1995 at Union Cemetery. Rev. Eldon G. Shingleton of Ravenswood, W.Va., died Sep. 13, 2004, at
Jackson General Hospital in Ripley, W.Va. He was a United Methodist minister for 40 years and owned and
operated Byke Works in Ravenswood. Memorials were to be made to the American Cancer Society.

SHIRLEY: Grace Adams Shirley, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Adams of the Wisconsin
Conference of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, was born Mar. 5, 1915, in Wisconsin.
She graduated from Bonebrake Seminary in 1940. In 1941 she joined Va. Conf. She had been
ordained in the Wisconsin Conference. Mrs. Shirley served faithfully with her husband Leslie O.
Shirley in our Mission Field in Sierra Leone, West Africa. [Glovier 1965, p. 321; see also pp. 91,
257, 259, 282]
SHIRLEY: Leslie O. Shirley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Shirley, was born Mar. 30, 1915, at
Inwood, Berkeley County, W.Va. He, with his parents, were members of our Inwood U.B.
Church, Inwood, W.Va. Rev. Shirley accepted the call to the Christian ministry following his
graduation from high school. He attended Shenandoah College, Dayton, Va., 1933-35; and he
earned his B.A. degree from Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Va., in 1937. He graduated
from Bonebrake Theological Seminary with a B.D. Degree in 1940. In 1940 he was ordained
at the Annual Conference Session of Sep. 24-26, 1940, held at Keyser, W.Va. He was
