Departments. The Academic Departments offer three courses of study—the English, the Scientific, and
the Classical. The English Course—is intended for those who desire only English studies. To such it offers
excellent facilities for pursuing the higher branches of an English Education. In the Spring Term of each year
classes are organized to accommodate those who desire to teach. To complete this course 3 years are required,
when the proper Diploma is granted. The Scientific Course—includes the full English course, to which is added
nine books in Latin. It is as comprehensive as possible within the limit of 4 years. It is commended as
introductory to the study of Medicine, Law, etc. It leads to a Diploma with the Scientific Degree. The Classical
Course—is intended to furnish a thorough Academic training. It is complete in itself, and offers superior
advantages to those whose circumstances will not permit a more extended course at college. It includes the
complete Scientific Course, with the addition of eight books in Greek. This course is recommended to those who
desire a thorough preparation for college and, if completed only in part, a certificate will be given citing the facts
in each case. The full course requires 5 years, and upon completion a Diploma will be granted. All students are
urged to take the Classical course.

Other Departments. Commercial Department—will furnish advantages to those who wish to prepare for
the mercantile business and other callings requiring a thorough knowledge of Bookkeeping, Commercial Law,
and Commercial Forms. A fair knowledge of the preparatory branches will be required before taking this course.
A Diploma is given on the completion of this course. Musical Department—The study of music is becoming
more important and necessary every day, and no education is complete without it. We can offer thorough
instruction and careful training at low rates to those desiring instrumental or vocal music. First-class instruments,
belonging to the Institute, are used. Lessons and daily practice on Piano, Organ, Violin and Cornet; Vocal Music;
Voice Culture; and Lessons in Harmony and Counterpoint are carefully taught. Also a thorough Teachers’
Course is given. Medical Course—intended to prepare medical students for college. If completed it carries
within 2 years of graduation in the leading Medical Colleges of the United States: It can be taken with advantage
in connection with the other courses of the Institute, and at much less cost than elsewhere.

Commercial Course—This course includes Book-Keeping and Banking, Commercial Law, Commercial
Arithmetic, Business Correspondence, Orthography and Penmanship. The time required for this course will
depend largely upon the student himself. If he has ability, and his previous, education has been thorough, the
work may be accomplished in 3 or 4 months. However, where it is convenient to do so, it is better to take some
other studies in connection, and give longer time to the course. This method will secure better results in practical
work. The demand for practical business education is constantly increasing with the rapid advance in the
mercantile world. The course is as thorough and complete as the average business college, while the entire cost is
not one-half. The books are those by William & Rogers, Rochester, N. Y., [which] are the books used in the
majority of business colleges throughout the country. (1) Bookkeeping—Is thoroughly taught by Double and
Single Entry, from the simplest to the most complicated partnership sets, including Shipping and Commission,
Special Column Journal, Executor Set, Petty Ledger, Cash Method, Wholesale, Retail, Manufacturing, Business
Practice and Banking. (2) Commercial Law—No person should go into business without a knowledge of the law
of commerce. This is taught under the following heads: Contracts, Negotiable Paper, Sale of Personal Property,
Agency, Partnership, Joint Stock Companies, Guaranty and Suretyship, Bailments, Shipping, Insurance, Lien,
Interest and Usury, Domestic Relations, Real Property, Real Estate Conveyance, Landlord and Tenant, and
Business Forms. (3) Commercial Arithmetic—Is thoroughly and comprehensively taught by short and accurate
methods, which are of everyday use. (4) Letter-Writing—No student should go out into the world without being
able to write a model business letter, hence this subject is given due attention. Legibility and ease in plain, rapid
writing can be acquired in a short time. Penmanship is one of the most beautiful arts, and should rank among the
first of business qualifications. Those interested in penmanship should write for specimens. Expenses: Single
scholarship for Complete Coarse, $25.00; books and stationery, $9.00.
