42). In general, the length of pastorates has been short. The pastorates might have a record of being short
but the years as officers for some of the laymen have been exceptional:

Memorial Gifts. The original pulpit Bible is in possession of the Broadway church. It has the

following inscription: “Presented to the Broadway United Brethren Church by George P. Hott and Wife.

Dated March 24, 1893.” The pulpit Bible now in use was presented to the church in April 1959, by the

Pollyanna Class. The original pulpit and altar rail, made by Mr. Anthony Rhodes, is still being used and

will be moved to the new church probably to be used in the Children’s Department. The bell from this

church will be transferred to the new church.

Members. Mr. L. D. Rhodes has served as secretary or assistant secretary for 50 years. Mr.
F. L. Zirkle served as a teacher at least 40 years and was church treasurer for approximately 20 years.
Mr. Walter Ritchie was a regular teacher for 25 years of the young men’s class, until Uncle Sam called
all his class with the exception of one to the Armed Services—they were Norris Crist, Warren Emswiler,
Wilmer Emswiler, Eugene Hoover, Edgar Long, Thomas Miller, Randall Ours, Walter Ritchie, Jr. He
has been serving as a substitute teacher since. Mrs. Walter Ritchie (Margaret) served as church and/or
Sunday school pianist for 39 years. Mr. S. M. Long has been janitor for 29 years. Miss Mary Alice
Ours has worked with the youth of our church approximately 27 years and served as a teacher in the
same department for approximately 20 years. Mr. John Ed. Helbert is the senior trustee of the church.
His father was a trustee at the time of his death. Mr. Thomas P. Long has served as secretary or assistant
secretary for approximately 18 years. Mrs. Bonnie Hoover is the church organist and choir director and
has served for 13 years. Mr. Sam Crider is our Sunday School Superintendent and has served in that
office for the past 11 years. Mrs. Alma Crider has been in charge of the nursery department for
approximately 12 years. Mrs. Darrell Helbert is now teaching the young women’s class and has had the
class for approximately 13 years, and is president of our WSWS. Mrs. Betty Turner, another faithful
teacher, has served approximately 11 years.
