In 1913 Dayton (on Dayton Circuit) reported a new carpet had been placed in the church at a cost
of $195, and the debt reduced $132. In 1914 Pleasant Grove—which was dedicated July 25, 1915—was

detached from Augusta Circuit and attached to Dayton Station. The Superintendent reported in 1916
that “Dayton was supplied by Sister Ida Judy, and she has done a splendid work. She was aided by Bro.

W. H. Smith, Sr., who looked after one appointment, Pleasant Grove, and he, too, has done a good
work.”

In 1917 the Superintendent reported: “The new addition to the church at Dayton is being pushed

to completion; when completed, the seating capacity will be nearly doubled and the church made more
commodious and modernized—D. D. Brandt is the pastor.” In 1918 the Superintendent reported that
“Dayton congregation will support one foreign missionary,” and he urged this example on other charges.
The Superintendent also reported in 1918: “The addition to the Church at Dayton was completed and
dedicated by Bishop William Bell, D. D., LL.D., April 7th, and cost $5,000. This addition has about
tripled the capacity of the Church, which was badly needed during the school sessions.” Mrs. Lucilla V.

Ruebush, wife of Ephraim Ruebush and mother of Professors J. H. and W. H. Ruebush, died at her home
in Dayton, July 23, 1919. “Sister Ruebush, was one of the mothers of the Conference and was always

interested in the work of the Conference and General Church, to which she gave of her means, prayers
and service.”

In 1920 Dayton Circuit Pastor D. D. Brandt reported $50 was spent on church repairs and $500
paid on the church debt. The Superintendent reported that Rev. D. D. Brant resigned Dayton June 15th,
1921. “The work on these charges was cared for as far as possible by myself, except at Dayton, Bros. J.
W. Keiter and N. R. Crist were appointed a committee to supply and they cared for the work there.” In

1921 Pleasant Grove was detached from Dayton Circuit and attached to Augusta Circuit. No pastor for

Dayton Church was named at the time, although C. W. Tinsman, E. B. Caplinger, J. R. Beale, and Ida

M. Judy were all at Shenandoah Collegiate Institute. In December 1921 Rev. Ida Judy was appointed to
the Dayton Church and “has rendered very efficient service.” She reported 155 members for 1922. Rev.

A. L. Maiden became pastor in September 1922. He was also Dean of the College Department at SCI in

1925.

In 1925 Dayton reported $908 paid on Church debt and repair during the year. In 1925 Mt. Zion

of Rockingham County was detached from Churchville Circuit and attached to Dayton (reporting 154

members in 1926). Stokesville was also attached to Dayton Circuit in 1925 (reporting 58 members in

1926). In 1927 Dayton reported $500 paid on church debt, Möller pipe organ contracted for, cost

$6,000; three-story Sunday school annex, cost $4,600; and old pipe organ valued at $1,200 donated to
Shenandoah College. In 1928 the Superintendent reported: “The Church at Dayton, Va., Rev. U. P.

Hovermale, Pastor, built a much-needed Sunday school departmental unit to the church and installed a

$20,000 pipe organ. Dedication services were held November 20, 1927. Dr. J. S. Fulton of Alleghany

Conference preached both morning and night. The dedicatory services was read by the writer. The

music for the occasion was of high order. The entire cost of improvements was $10,000. The pipe
organ was largely a gift of the M. P. Möller Co., Hagerstown, Md.” In 1928 Dayton reported $2,750
paid on church debt and $180 interest. In 1929 he Superintendent reported for Dayton: “observed

special anniversary services, Pastor U. P. Hovermale in charge, assisted by the Superintendent and Dr. J.
S. Fulton of Alleghany Conference. More than $600 was received on improvement.” Dayton reported
in 1929 it had “added to the beauty of the church property by planting shrubbery on church lawn cost
$105.” Mt. Zion was detached from Dayton in 1929.

In 1930 the Superintendent reported: “Dayton observed Anniversary Day with Rev. U. P.
Hovermale in charge, with good results.” In 1976 Dayton reported 176 members (no other churches

attached to the charge). Dayton Pastor Wade S. Miller became Dean (later, President) of Shenandoah

College in 1933 and Rev. M. J. Miller was appointed pastor in his place. In 1938 the Superintendent
