Hardy Circuit Pastor George McGuire reported that Caplingers Chapel had $50 in the treasury to repair

the chapel. In 1915 the Hardy Circuit report noted that Caplingers Chapel had a new roof and had

painted the church interior and exterior for $80. In 1917 the report was for two hanging lamps, $9.50.
In 1921 Hardy Circuit reported 440 members: Caplingers, 64; Baker’s Run, 90; Garrett’s, 91;
Heishman’s, 29; Inkerman, 23; Jenkin’s, 101; and Sperry’s Run, 42. In 1926 the membership at

Caplingers had increased to 105 and to 138 in 1931.

In 1959 the Conference Superintendent reported he had “preached in a week of special services
in Caplingers Chapel.” The Hardy Circuit report in 1961 noted: “Caplingers Church—Roof painted

with aluminum paint, also interior, pews, windows and floor; due to a fine new spirit of interest, and
voluntary labor in this church, total cash cost is held to $6,500.” All the churches of Hardy Circuit were
“permitted to go to the West Virginia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church effective as
of June 11, 1969, except Caplingers, which will become a part of the new Fulk’s Run Charge Virginia
Conference.”

Table 18, below, identifies some early pastors for Lost River Mission/Circuit. In the years
before 1921, membership data was recorded only for the charge and not for the individual churches and
other appointments. Table 19, below that, provides the names of appointed pastors and membership
data for Caplingers U.B. and EUB church (1921-69). Note that “Year Ends 1884” means conference
year 1883-84 and that the data were reported at the 1884 Annual Conference. Thus, J. G. Ketterman
served Caplingers Chapel (and other churches of Lost River Mission) 1883-85, and N. A. Kiracofe,
1885-86.
