In 1944 and in 1945 the Superintendent reported that Warren Trumbo of Broadway Charge, then
at Shenandoah College, was granted Quarterly Conference License to Preach the Gospel. The charge
reported in 1944 a bath and furnace at the parsonage installed for $500. In 1946 Broadway Circuit
Pastor P. J. Slonaker reported: Bethany, 206 members; Broadway, 184; Mt. Carmel, 276; and Riverside,
98, for a total of 764 members. The 1946 report for Broadway Church was improvements to the kitchen
and lavatories for $500.
In 1947 a new district parsonage had been purchased in Broadway for $11,100 from Mr. and
Mrs. Earl A. Kline, and improvements for inlaid linoleum for the kitchen, painting of the entire interior,
and a new cement walk in front of the house cost an additional $326. Broadway EUB Church
improvements reported in 1947 were for $1,811; and new garage and parsonage improvements, $1,200.
In 1949 the Superintendent noted he had taught a course on “The Christian Home” in the Community
Leadership Training School in Broadway and that he had preached April 17, 1949, in Easter Union
Sunrise services in Broadway. Also in 1949 the Superintendent recommended Wilton Thomas of
Broadway for admission to Conference and License of Probationer. The 1949 charge report was for
Electric stove and water heater in the parsonage for $377; and new pews and chairs in Broadway church
for $2,212. By 1950 membership in Broadway Circuit had fallen from 764 to 717 members: Bethany,
189 members (down 17); Broadway, 188 (up 4); Mt. Carmel, 245 (down 31); and Riverside, 95
(down 3).
In 1951 Broadway reported rest rooms, new gas stove, water heater in basement, new bulletin
board and outdoor fireplace, and new Wurlitzer Electric Organ for $3,364. Rev. Wilton Bruce Thomas
and Miss Helen Virginia Fulk were married December 16th, 1951, in Broadway Church with their
Minister, Rev. W. E. Wolfe, performing the ceremony. In 1952 the Superintendent reported
improvement to the “splendid” district parsonage: “Early this year the kitchen and den were painted and
in recent days the roof and outside woodwork were painted. Also, the driveway was hard surfaced with
black top, a new roof put on the garage, and a grape arbor built.” Further improvements were reported
in 1953: “New light fixtures were installed throughout the house during the past summer; a power
mower was purchased; and a new sunken pump was installed in the basement. In 1953 Broadway
Church reported improvements of $682. In 1954 the Superintendent preached three nights in Holy
Week services at Broadway Church. The charge report in 1954 noted a new altar set for the Church
composed of gold cross, two candlesticks, and gold offering plates; the pulpit furniture recovered;
nursery equipment for babies; and the church basement floors and walls repainted. The son, Rev. Lee B.
Sheaffer, of the Broadway Circuit Pastor Lee E. Sheaffer was married in Winchester July 10, 1955. The
1955 report of improvements for Broadway Church identified gold offering plates, Venetian blinds,
chairs for children’s department, communion table, kitchen sink, electric stove, and refrigerator for
$831. The Superintendent preached in the 1956 Union Good Friday Services in Broadway. The 1956
charge report for Broadway Church cited folding and child chairs, $168; cabinets and cases, $122; and
educational unit painted by volunteers, no cost; total, $290. Broadway present plans for an educational
unit to the Conference Board of Missions in 1957. Miss Tania Wynn Gaither, daughter of Broadway
Charge Pastor Rev. and Mrs. Golden A. Gaither, died September 26, 1957, after having lived but 44
hours; interment was in Mt. Grove Cemetery on Broadway Charge, the Conference Superintendent
conducting graveside services.
The 1958 Broadway Charge report for the parsonage included Painting interior and front porch;
sanding and refinishing living and dining room floors; combination screen and storm doors front and
back, and removal of two large trees from parsonage yard for $450. In 1959 the Superintendent
reported: “At his request, we recommended the transfer of the Rev. Golden A. Gaither to the
Pennsylvania Conference. In his 4 years in this Conference at Broadway, he has a most commendable
record: in this time. he has had 39 baptisms, 42 conversions, 34 funerals, and 20 weddings; and the
