Stained Glass Windows in the Churches of Harrisonburg
Muhlenberg Lutheran Church
Muhlenberg Window
John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg (1746 – 1807) was pastor of the Lutheran Church in Woodstock. This
window depicts him delivering his last sermon at the conclusion of which he shed his clerical robes to
reveal his sword. Nearby is the uniform of a militia officer. With the words from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, he set
forth to fight in the American Revolution. Commissioned a colonel in the Continental Army, he ended the
war a Major General, having participated in the Battles of Germantown, Brandywine, Monmouth, Stony
Point, commanding the First Brigade of Light Infantry at Yorktown. The designer of this window and the
Luther window has handled details, the illusion of space, and the suggestion of high drama exceptionally
well.
In Memoriam: Harry Holland Sloop. Mary Edna Ketchie and H. E. H. Sloop, Parents; Camila Dovel Sloop, Wife; and
Richard C. and Jane Warren Sloop, Thomas D. and Lucy Depoy Sloop. JoAnn and Marvin L. Simmers, Suzan and
John D. Sitar, Children.
