Stained Glass Windows in the Churches of Harrisonburg
St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ
358 South Main Street.
This congregation was organized in 1894. The present church building was constructed in 1931
to the designs of Charles Bolton and Son, architects, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Working closely with
the Rev. J. Silor Garrison, the designs developed are in the style of an English Parish Church of the 14th
century.
Dr. Garrison in his History of the Reformed Church in Virginia (p. 455) writes: The Parish Church was
England’s finest contribution to the Medieval art, and it is particularly appropriate to the needs of the
modern church for many reasons. The ideas and ideals it expressed are very similar to those we would
express in our churches today. These churches were centers, not only of religious devotion, but also of
the community life of the period in which they were built.
