The battle of Port Republic, the last of General Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, was fought on June 9, 1862. The battlefield lies one and one-half miles downriver from the village of Port Republic. The APCWS (Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites) has established a short interpretive trail with signage at the "coaling" which overlooks the battlefield. The coaling was the site of the placement of Federal guns; some of the fiercest fighting of the war took place in an effort to gain or keep control of these guns.
