6. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Here we have one of the oldest buildings in Rockingham County. It stands not so far from the place where it is thought General Spotswood crossed the Shenandoah River in 1716. The old store was built by George Conrad about 1785, and was used as a post office. George Conrad was appointed postmaster April 6, 1816. Berry Conrad succeeded him in 1832, and held the office about one year. Henry Conrad was appointed in 1833, and held the office until Joseph Conrad was appointed in 1849. It is stated that during the War Between the States there were several skirmishes near this old store but very little fighting.
This old house was used at one time for a schoolhouse and for a general mercantile store, post office, and also as a dwelling house, and was a store long before the town of Elkton was formed. It was then known as Conrad Store Post Office.
